Opening in 2012, Canal Mills in Leeds quickly made a big mark on Leeds' social scene. Situated in an old mill just outside the city centre by the River Aire, Canal Mills Leeds is a large culture and arts space which has been regularly used for throwing electronic music events as well as more recently playing host to other unique, creative affairs.

Canal Mills Leeds consists of four areas, one of which is new for the 2014/15 season of events. On entering, the first you see is a bar area scattered with quirky seating and some interesting art installations, a nice place to take a breather from all the action in the other rooms. The main room is a large warehouse style space with bare walls and a metal arch covering the DJ booth at the far end of the room, complete with a hefty sound system and towering columns in various spots. The third space acts as a second room for clubbing events and is smaller when compared to the main room, however the washed brick walls and exposed pipes give it a raw, underground feel which makes seeing techno artists like Trevino in here very exciting indeed. Add the new third room and  a spacious outside area and you have quite the space, be it for a club night or other endeavour.

When Canal Mills in Leeds first opened it was solely used for electronic music events, with popular clubbing brands like Resident Advisor and the Leeds based brand Mono_Cult hosting events here. These club nights regularly see big names like Ben Klock, Tale of Us, Jackmaster, Bicep and Nina Kraviz play to huge audiences in the main room, with the likes of Levon Vincent and more having done some major damage in the second room. Canal Mills has also been a hot spot for Wax:On and Mono_Cult’s bank holiday parties, which last year saw Disclosure host a special New Years Eve soirée that quickly sold out.

As well as quickly gaining a reputation as an underground house and techno haven, Canal Mills Leeds has broadened it’s horizons to provide more than just a music venue to the people of Leeds. More recently it has put together the ‘Brandon Street Night Market’. These events that are hosted on the final Friday of the month consist of guest street food markets, live music acts, art installations, clothing brands and drinks to create a unique social hub to explore for all groups of people. As well as this it has also been the stage for sell out theatre productions including BackBreak Theatre’s 1981 adaptation of ‘Two Gents’. Canal Mills versatility is continuing to attract new brands and events like real ale festivals and much more.
