Blacklight Presents Perc Trax Showcase
Blacklight Presents Perc Trax Showcase
After an amazing start to 2016 with Ben Sims and Dax J bringing it hard to the Mint Club we are delighted to bring one of the leading underground techno labes Perc Trax to Leeds for a label showcase with label boss Perc and one of the hottest live acts in techno AnD.
Perc Trax was launched in 2004 as a vehicle for Perc’s own productions and over the years has evolved into one of the must check imprints for those with an interest in rough-edged electronic music. Under Perc’s careful guidance Perc Trax has developed a core roster of artists including Truss, Sawf, Forward Strategy Group and of course Perc himself with heavyweights such as Ancient Methods, Richard H. Kirk, Marcel Fengler, Factory Floor and Chris Carter appearing regularly on remix duties. Initially the label prided itself on being judged solely on its musical output but regular collaborations with designer Jonny Costello, starting with Perc’s ‘Wicker & Steel’ album, has seen the label become regarded as one the most visually innovative in its field. The label has won Resident Advisor’s renowned label of the month title and has been the subject of a feature in the Guardian newspaper in June of 2012, a rarity for a label with such an uncompromising sound. The label’s releases are respected for both their experimental edge and their dancefloor power, leading to Perc Trax showcases regularly being promoted around the world from Tokyo to New York and across Europe.
The move to album releases that started in 2009 has seen Perc Trax reach more people than ever before and the launch of two sub-labels in 2013 (Submit and Perc Trax Ltd.) has allowed a wider range of artists including London acid hero Matt Whitehead and industrial legends Einstürzende Neubauten to join the Perc Trax family. In 2014 Perc Trax celebrated its tenth year of releasing music, a period that has seen 70 vinyl releases and 6 albums across its three labels. To celebrate this milestone Perc Trax released three EPs of new tracks as well as a double CD compilation including Perc’s first commercially available mix cd. The 10 Years tour ended with the label's largest ever London event in February 2015 featuring the UK debut of Perc & Truss, plus Factory Floor, Randomer, Powell, Pete Swanson and more. Moving forward through 2015 the label has already released a well received Truss EP with a string of EP's, events and Perc Trax's first film project lined up for the rest of the year.
Perc is one of electronic music’s reference points: an internationally touring DJ and live act, label owner and one of the most respected producers in techno today. From his early demos being signed by James Holden back in 2002 to his current position as one of the most forward-thinking individuals in techno Perc (aka London based Ali Wells) has continued to challenge and innovate as his recognition has grown. As a DJ, Perc has taken his sound across the world to such seminal clubs as Berghain, Fabric, Ministry Of Sound, Cocoliche, Fuse, Space Ibiza, Tresor, Unit in Tokyo and to festivals including Awakenings, Mayday, Unsound, Soenda, 10 Days Off, Extrema and many more. Perc’s DJ and live sets are industrial landscapes optimized for the dance floor. His podcast for Resident Advisor’s scene-leading mix series is Perc at his very best and a perfect example of his fusion of bleeding edge techno and classic noise and experimental influences. In 2007 Perc signed to Kompakt records. His first release for the Cologne-based powerhouse was ‘Up’, one of the summer hits of that year receiving festival plays from everyone from Erol Alkan and Simian Mobile Disco to Chris Liebing and Green Velvet. After this remixes followed for such heavyweights as DJ Hell, Surgeon, Ed Rush and Trentemoller as well as releases on a run of top level labels including Drumcode, Ovum and Electric Deluxe and multiple releases on Chris Liebing’s CLR and Lucy’s Stroboscopic Artefacts. Perc’s debut album 'Wicker & Steel' was released in 2011 and the move to the full-length format brought him a new level of respect. Following launch parties in London, New York and Tokyo the album picked up a stream of plaudits from the expected dance-press coverage to crossing over into the UK national newspapers. Perc spent 2012 and 2013 diversifying with projects ranging from focussed dancefloor EPs to experimental releases including a collaboration with industrial legends Einstürzende Neubauten, whilst a run of remixes saw him turning in interpretations of everyone from Factory Floor on DFA to Tim Burgess on Oh Genesis and Oscar Mulero on Warm-Up. In case people thought Wicker and Steel was a lucky first stab at the album format 2014’s ‘The Power & The Glory’ changed all that, with the album reaching a wider audience than ever before and spawning a 40-date world tour covering three continents. In the second half of the year Perc Trax celebrated its tenth birthday with a 2xCD album featuring Perc's first commercially available mix cd, three vinyl EPs and worldwide tour. This tour culminated in a sell-out homecoming event in London headlined by Perc & Truss (making their UK debut as a pair) plus Factory Floor, Randomer, Powell, Avus and more. Now in 2015 Perc has continued his relentless gigging schedule with gigs in across Europe and in South America whilst tours of Australia and Asia will happen later this year. He is also set to return to Perc Trax with his first full EP for the label since 2012 whilst also working on tracks and remixes (Bleaching Agent, Ansome, Chiapet) for a number of other labels. His successful collaborative projects with Truss and Adam X continue both as recording and performing projects whilst his own solo live set is set to return revamped and more powerful than ever in early 2016.
AnD (Perc Trax / Horizontal Ground / Black sun Records)
Mancunian duo AnD rose to prominence in 2011 following a slew of ground breaking releases characterised by their refurbished, stripped back and Dave Clarke-inspired brand of techno. True vinyl purists, the two maintain fierce analogue production principals and showcase this in their heavy hitting live show.
AnD’s modernistic approach has been endorsed by trailblazing UK imprints Project Squared and Idle Hands, whilst their purist ideologies have been employed by the visionary Horizontal Ground, Black Sun Records and Repitch labels. Meanwhile covert productions on their own self-titled white label series has seen the pair embrace the shadowy outskirts of techno, furthered by a collaboration with Headless Horseman, Sunil Sharpe and D.Carbone for the clandestine Brothers imprint.
In recent years they’ve been stepping out under the banner of Speedy J’s respected Electric Deluxe brand, culminating in the release of their critically acclaimed debut album, ‘Cosmic Microwave Background’, back in Autumn 2014. The record sewed up AnD’s uncompromising sound into a long form dancefloor contemplation of the cosmos. It has since been remixed by a selection of the pair’s own noisy set of heroes, including Sleeparchive, O/H, Black Rain and JK Flesh, in a way completing the circle back to source.
Together with Tom Dicicco, the three artists established Inner Surface Music back in 2011, which has already garnered support from the likes of Regis, Surgeon, Lucy, Norman Nodge, DVS1 and many more. But it’s from the booth that AnD have been making their presence truly felt. As on point vinyl selectors and potent live performers they’ve been storming their way across Europe, from Berghain in Berlin to the mammoth Gashouder at Amsterdam Dance Event, leaving no floor unscathed by their wrecking ball sound and sledgehammer ethics.
Jay Knight ( Locked / Colour)
