BlaqueXplosion || Celebrating Black culture and the origins of Black sound w/ Frank Bruno MBE, Jermain Jackmanand JoJo
BlaqueXplosion is a day of celebration, discussing the development of music of black origin, dance roots and methods of self-expression. Through Africa to the Caribbean and then into Black British culture, the music of Black Britain today has drawn upon, echoed and evolved in itself, always reflecting social activity, economic struggle, discrimination and community exclusions and inclusions.
Together we’ll chart this journey right through to today’s music of Black origin in Leeds, which reflects ‘Youth Culture’, dance and musical genres, and political and social views, rather than being rooted in ethnicity.
BlaqueXplosion will celebrate the community and customs of Leeds’ Black community, two of the topics the day will explore through spoken word, brought to you by international poet Khadijah Ibrahiim. Multi-faceted poet/performer Akeim Toussaint Buck will perform live for us, and we’ll hear about the impact of music on mental health.
We’ll chart a difficult and personal relationship with mental health in the public eye with Frank Bruno MBE, who’ll share his own experiences, and we’ll also have an exclusive performance by Jermain Jackman, winner of the third season of The Voice (2013). Jermain will perform alongside Black Health Initiative’s #UnsignedActs. As well as all of the above, the day will be full of stalls selling arts, crafts and jewellery.
Frank Bruno MBE will join co-host JoJo in narrating the day, which is bound to be an insightful and joyful celebration of the Black British community here in Leeds. This family-friendly day will run through into the evening, where amazing Sound System Iration Steppas will bring some of the best old sounds along with some contemporary beats, to get you moving.Speakers: Frank BrunoJoJoJermain Jackman
