Brotherhood Presents Tama Sumo & Lakuti

This is an event we've found really difficult to keep under wraps, so we're ecstatic to finally anounce that we're bringing Tama Sumo & Lakuti to Wire for our halloween party on the 27th October.

Supprting them will be two of Leeds rising stars, and new members to the Brotherhood family, Tami & Luce.

We'll be running a little bit later than usual for this one as we're expecting it to be quite a party - but tickets are limited so don't sleep!

Tama Sumo

“Music is pure communication – stay in contact and follow your heart!”

Heart, emotion and passion instead of pure functionality – these are Tama Sumo's DJ characteristics in a nutshell. She started out in 1993 at Drama bar in Berlin / Kreuzberg, one of the first bars to ever feature its own DJ at the weekend and an important hang out for the scene before going to the clubs.

Drama was one of the few venues at the time, playing house music, when techno was dominating most of the other clubs and bars. Tama Sumo used to play a lot of New York style vocal house and quickly became a regular DJ behind the decks at the gay Saturdays at Café Moskau. In the beginning of 1994 she started playing regularly at the legendary Club Globus/Tresor and became a resident DJ for about 10 years at the club.

Since 2001 Tama Sumo also played regularly at the Dance With The Aliens party at the old OstGut, Berghain's predecessor club, which eventually opened the door to a residency at the new Panorama Bar & Berghain shortly after the club opened.
She developed a varied style ranging from House, Disco, Techno, a smidgen of Detroit Electro and Pop. “Music for me is something very subjective and I always attempt to approach it with my intuition & heart,” Tama Sumo comments.

“To be a DJ for me means to be in touch with the audience without words and to interact with the crowd and give them what they need whilst staying true to myself at the same time. It’s also fundamental to my work that I succeed at letting the music, the crowd and myself run freely. I have to turn off my head and go with the flow. I love to create and play with different moods and atmospheres. And I’m still fascinated by the fact that music can release a huge amount of energy and fun.”

Lakuti

Lerato Khathi aka Lakuti grew up in Soweto, South Africa. She took a deep interest in music from a very young age, inspired by her mother’s impressive collection of Soul & Funk. Her grandfather also played a significant part in further nurturing her musical interest by schooling her in the art of Jazz. She inherited his jazz collection when he passed away and to this date has held onto every piece of vinyl from this collection. The biggest influence & inspiration was to come however with the first batch of Chicago house records which led to her opening a small club in a 100 capacity theatre in Johannesburg whilst studying a law degree.

After a brief sting in Canada she relocated to London to focus on music full time. Its in Londn that she met the legendary Earl Gateshead, the powerhouse behind the Trojan Soundsystem, who took her under his wing. They promoted a monthly Friday for about 1 year at the hugely influential underground hub, Plastic People in London.

From there she went on to run the populer Süd parties with Portable which saw performances from artists such as Juan Atkins, Move D, Rick Wade, Dj Jus Ed, Boo Williams, Tama Sumo , Prosumer and more before relocated to Berlin where she now runs the Uzuri bookings & artist management agency and co-promotes a friday night at Panorama bar with her wife, Tama Sumo.

Luce

Lucy williams AKA LUCE has burst over the Leeds scene over the past year with an incredibly positive reception. Her experimental approach to mixing formed whilst playing at sound art exhibitions brings atmosphere and suspense but also slams hard when applied in a club setting.

With a range of genres from electro, to heavy 80s funk, experimental techno to anything freaky she's supported names like Peggy gou at wire club, Marcel Vogel and is a DJ and supporter of Love muscle at wharf chambers.

In contrast to the DJ scene she's the founder of 'Bath Time Sessions' a joint radio show, at KMAH Radio Leeds. The show is exploring more of the experimental side of things, but pushing towards ambient, sound art, and playing around with layering music.

Lucy has been a figurehead of the growing female DJ scene in Leeds, and you can read more about here in the Brudenel Groove article below.

Tami

Hailing from South Africa, but having moved to Leeds for university, Tami has proved herself to be a key player in the Leeds creative scene. With her passion for the environent and social enterprise equalling her love for music, she's responsible for setting up Elemental Leeds: a creative collective of natural artists, musicians and environmental forward-thinkers inspiring positive action for the planet, and helps run House For The Homeless, a charity night which fundraises for The Community Garden Kitchen.

Her DJ style fuses afrobeat, house and disco with down right guilty pleasures expertly - so it's no wonder she's a regular at Love Muscle, Flux and now a core member of the Brotherhood Team.
