As one of the pioneering groups in the world of hip-hop, De La Soul first formed in 1987 and released their debut album ‘3 Feet High And Rising’ to critical acclaim, as it was also a very important album in the early life of the hip-hop genre. Selected as one of the best hip-hop albums of all time by many publications and music critics alike, it started a wave of hip-hop artists who gravitated away from the gangsta rap style that was being taken by many artists of that era.
‘Me, Myself and I’, ‘The Magic Number’ and ‘Buddy’ were just some of the most successful singles on the album, which was released in 1989. Sampling everyone from Johnny Cash to Hall & Oates, there aren’t many hip-hop groups today that sound at all like De La Soul, still proving timeless and innovative even today.
Having confirmed that they are again collaborating with Prince Paul, who featured on a number of tracks from the debut album, De La Soul have a lot of new music on the way, which will build the foundations for their tour that will kick off on the 9th of May in Fort Worth in Texas. The group will come over to the UK on the 23rd of May where they will play in Southampton before making their way North, playing at Liverpool’s O2 Academy on Saturday the 30th of May.
