Spoek is at the forefront of a new wave of post-apartheid African talent nurturing a progressive ethos whilst also maintaining a pride in their culture. Sometimes dubbed ‘township tech’, Spoek’s genre-straddling output fuses Western styles and African influences within a global sound. A singer, rapper, songwriter, instrumentalist and all-round maverick musical polymath, Spoek’s rich and diverse output includes acclaimed albums, eye-popping videos, and a recent mixtape and accompanying video game. More releases are planned, including a new album next year. Meanwhile, Spoek’s headline date at XOYO will be his only London show of 2013.
We've just confirmed Benin City to open the show - Q Magazine gave the band 4 stars, hailing them 'a dazzling cut-up of bass-heavy electronics, warped jazz and forward-thinking hip-hop’.
