If there is one track that dominated 2015 it was What’s A Girl To Do by Fatima Yamaha aka Bas Bron: that brilliant bit of bobbing electro frivolity, first committed to wax in 2004, and risen like the phoenix last year with ongoing the support of Glasgow DJs like Jackmaster and Hudson Mohawke.
Its odd, lilting melody and breezy production have been bubbling underground for the past ten years, as a lasting favourite in the Scottish party city. But as selectors cottoned on to its subtle charm, and inexplicable dancefloor compatibility, crowds the world over started to have religious experiences to the track. Dekmantel repressed it in June, Bron played a gorgeous Boiler Room live set at their festival in his home town of Amsterdam, and the rest is history.
At HiFi we’re going to celebrate the power of the cult following by inviting Fatima Yamaha to play his live set. And, in this deepest darkest winter, those bright, warbling synths (especially in that now anthemic track) might help you to recover some of the joy of last summer.
