George Mpanga, more commonly known as George The Poet is a British spoken word artist who was nominated for the Critics Choice Award at The BRITS this year, after a number of his EPs were highly praised by a number of musical outfits.
Born to Ugandan parents, George began his musical journey as a grime artist when he was 15 years old, shortly before deciding that he would adapt his works to poetry as a richer form of communication. In an interview, Mpanga explained how rap start are “expected to make money for the industry”, whereas a poet’s job is to provide social commentary.
Whilst George was studying at King’s College in Cambridge, he won a competition organised by Channel 4 and Barclays that involved entrants describing how they would spend £100,000, winning his £16,000 that he invested in a series of poetry workshops for underprivileged children in London.
Looking towards his own artistic pieces, My City, a poem about George’s hometown (London), lead to him being selected to play at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in June 2012 as well as a record deal at Island Records, a label founded in Jamaica that is now a subsidiary of the Universal Music Group. Whilst being signed to Island George The Poet has released a number of tracks including It’s Yours, My City and the Chicken And The Egg EP, all of which have strong political themes.
Vice have said that Mpanga has the “tightest lyricism of the year to date” and his collaborations with Bodhi have become club hits. Expect a multi genre journey of lyrical genius.
