JAH SHAKA SOUND SYSTEM
Jah Shaka’s roots reggae sound system has been bringing the noise to parties all over the world since the 1970’s. His combination of energy, dynamic styles and spiritual content earned him a huge following after he moved on from operating the Freddie Cloudburst SS to owning his own, also influencing many post-punk artists and bands such as The Slits and Public Image Ltd.
The record label owned by Jah Shaka has released a long line of tracks and LPs from a mixture of both Jamaican and English artists, some of which include Bim Sherman, Prince Alba, Aswad, Johnny Clarke, Max Romeo and Dread & Fred. Along with his influence on British punk bands, it is also Jah Shaka who has caused a boat load of todays most popular sound system collectives, such as Aba Shanti-I, Channel one and Iration Steppas to adopt his uncompromising warrior style.
Gigs in New York’s Central Park, work in documentaries, films and on TV programmes as well as starting the Jah Shaka Foundation to help with projects in Ghana have all mounted Jah Shaka’s profile as one of the most influential and exceptional sound system operators of today, with his music gelling it altogether and presenting one hell of a show, with Basement Jaxx members Felix and Simon saying seeing Jah Shaka was the best night out they have ever had.
