South London based rap duo Krept & Konan formed in 2009 after operating as both individual artists and as part of the rap group Gipset, who were in action throughout the back end of the 00’s. Krept & Konan released their first mix tape back in 2010, for which the brought in a number of vocalists from the underground scene in London, including Snap, Jadajazz, Fret Deezy and Killa Ki.
2010 was also the year during which Krept & Konan released their second mix tape, Tsunami, which took a different route of inviting more mainstream artists such a Giggs, Wretch 32, Scorcher and Ghetts, which helped the mix sell over 2,000 physical copies and 60,000 digital downloads, giving the pair a taste of the mainstream success.
During the following months, Krept & Konan covered collaborations between Drake & Lil’ Wayne (The Motto) and Kanye West & Jay-Z (Otis), the latter of which mounted over 5 million views on YouTube in one week. Preceding this, Skepta asked the pair to join him on tour in the UK.
The third mix that Krept & Konan released fused the hip-hop underground with other mainstream names the pair had worked with before or had aspired to. Young Kingz featured the likes of George The Poet, Tinie Tempah, Ari, Tungen, Chip, Fekky, G FrSH and much more, with the album’s lead single Don’t Waste My Time being remixed by the likes of French Montana, MNEK, Lady Leshurr and Wretch 32 after attracting lots of attention amongst UK grime artists. Not only that, the mix tape also won a world record for being the highest charting UK album by an unsigned group.
Since gaining the accolade Krept & Konan have signed with Virgin EMI and have won a number of awards including Best International Act at the BET Awards and Best Newcomer at The MOBO Awards in 2013. The duo has kicked off the year with 2 singles Certified and Freak Of The Week, which featured Jeremih and Rick Ross.
