South London based rappers Krept & Konan started making music individually and as part of the rap collective Gipset, which was active in the South London scene during the late 00’s. The pair formed the musical duo formed in 2009 and released their first mix tape as a duo in 2010. The mix saw Krept & Konan recruit collaborators such as Snap, Jadajazz, Fret Deezy and Killa Ki.
Tsunami is the second mixtape released by Krept & Konan, which hit the shelves in the same year as the first, however this one stepped outside of the underground realm to see the duo collaborative with mainstream artists such as Ghetts, Wretch 32, Scorcher and Giggs. This proved hugely successful for the duo who sold 2,000 physical copies of Tsunami, as well as selling 60,000 copies through music download website.
This taste of the mainstream led Krept & Konan to cover Otis and The Motto, two tracks produced through the joining of well known rappers Jay-Z and Kanye West as well as Lil’ Wayne & Drake. Their cover of Otis received over 5 million views on YouTube during its first week online and provoked UK Grime artist Skepta to ask the pair to come on tour with him around the UK.
The third remix that Krept & Konan released was the 2014 LP Young Kingz, which this time took inspiration from both their previous mixes and combined the hip-hop underground with the current mainstream. The album invited the likes of George The Poet and Tinie Tempah alongside Chip, Ari and Tungen, with the lead single Don’t Waste My Time receiving huge attention from UK Grime artists such as Lady Leshurr and Wretch 32, whor remixed the track as well as other names like French Montana and MNEK.
Krept & Konan won Best Newcomer at the 2013 MOBO awards as well as Best International Act at the BET Awards in Los Angeles amongst many other awards in the past few years. The duo have released two tracks this year, Freak Of The Week and Certified, which feature both Rick Ross and Jeremih.
