Plus Special Guests
Krept & Konan are the South London hip hop duo who formed in 2009 after having made music under both their individual aliases and as part of the group Gipset, a notorious rap collective in South London which was active during the late years of the 00’s. Krept & Konan’s first mix tape was released in 2010 and saw collaborations from a number of other London based rappers such as Fret Deezy, Snap, Killa Ki and Jadajazz.
During the same year, the duo also released their second mix tape, Tsunami, which stepped up from the underground to instead invite mainstream artists including Wretch 32, Giggs, Ghetts and Scorcher to feature on the mix. The mix was well received selling over 2,000 copies and mounting up over 60,000 digital downloads on the web, paving a way for bigger things.
In a feat to boost their presence online, Krept and Konan covered two US collaborations that were Kanye West & Jay-Z’s Otis and Drake and Lil’ Wayne’s The Motto, the first of which got 5 million views on YouTube during the week after being uploaded. It was after this that the pair was invited by UK Grime hero Skepta to join him on his British tour.
Young Kingz was the third mix tape that the duo released, which invited the longest line of feature vocalists yet, this time combining the mainstream with the underground that their music careers had matured in. Tinie Tempah, George The Poet, Tungen, Ari, Chip, G FrSH, Fekky and many more feature on the album, with the lead single Don’t Waste My Time attracting attention from the grime scene early in 2014, provoking the likes of Wretch 32, Lady Leshurr, MNEK and French Montana to produce remixes of the track. The mix tape is also a world record holder for being the highest charting UK album by an unsigned act.
Since winning Best Newcomer at the MOBO Awards in 2013, Krept & Konan have signed to Virgin EMA and have also won the Best International Act award at the BTE Awards in Los Angeles, California amongst many other awards. This year the duo has released two new singles with Rick Ross and Jeremih, titled Certified and Freak Of The Week.
