+ DJ sets: Brudenell Groove
Retrace the pioneering steps taken across Manchester’s dancefloors.
Directed by Javi Senz, the brand-new feature-length film captures the atmosphere in Manchester as the first waves of House music crossed the Atlantic from Chicago and barrelled into a city ready to apply its own distinctive stamp on clubbing culture. This is not simply another account of the much revered Haçienda. Pulling together rare archive footage, in-depth interviews, and commentary from defining figures of Manchester’s scene, the film recounts three decades of musical transformation and underground culture from the pre-hacienda 1980s through to current day.
With stories recalled through the eyes and ears of leading DJs, producers and promoters such as Mike Pickering, Marshall Jefferson, Carl Craig, Andrew Weatherall, Seth Troxler, Todd Terry, Dave Haslam, Ralph Lawson, Will Tramp, and Laurent Garnier. Manchester Keeps on Dancing offers an arresting new account of the city’s journey form burgeoning music purveyor to a world-wide influence rightly classed alongside the likes of Chicago, Detroit, and Berlin.
Following the screening, the audience will have further opportunity to relocate in the pulse of Manchester’s clubbing scene through a Q&A with Jamie Nicholson (producer) and Ralph Lawson (DJ and record label owner).
Highlighting Manchester’s influence is still alive and well 50 miles up the road, Leeds DIY dancefloor provocateurs Brudenell Groove will be spinning a selection of records to close out the evening.
