Finishing off 2016 with a trio of techno talent, bi-monthly Sabajaq says goodbye to a year that has seen pioneers and high flyers from Green Velvet and Dinamo Azari to Pleasurekraft and Pig&Dan take charge of its dance floors.
Heading up the techno room for its final blast of the year is The Advent, aka Cisco Ferreira, the UK's closest equivalent to Detroit's hallowed Belleville Three. Starting out in the acid house era, he was an engineer for the likes of Derrick May, Fingers Inc, Adonis and Marshall Jefferson, as well as working at R&S, co-producing CJ Bolland's classic 'Camargue' amongst other hits, and releasing a stream of solo tracks. It was when we teamed up with Mr G, however, that The Advent was born, their hard techno and electro sound producing a stream of era defining EPs and albums and taking them around the world. Now operating solo, Cisco continues to release at a prolific rate.
When it comes to solid techno grooves, Markus Suckut has few rivals. A mix for RA this year showcased his brooding sound, switching between machine-tooled techno, minimalistic melody, pumping Chicago jack and reinforced breakbeats. As such he's found a regular home on Rekkids, his latest release the hypnotic pump of '10 Y'. The vinyl-only Exile label he runs with Johannes Heil, meanwhile, continues to go from strength to strength, the forthcoming acid-fuelled sixth release taking its cues from Germany golden age of '90s techno and trance.
Joining his label partner, Johannes Heil brings his well oiled live show. Having been plying his trade since the mid-90s, Heil has ten albums under his belt to draw from, releasing albums on labels including Cocoon, Klang Elektronik, Data Punk and, most recently, with the highly sought after 'The Black Light' (currently going for over £60 on Discogs), his own Exile imprint. A master of tension and release, his performances guarantee a taut, thrilling display of teutonic techno mastery. Support will come from Egg resident Kyle E.
Sabajaq's residents are also out in full force in the tech house room. After a successful summer repping Solid Grooves in Ibiza, Maze & Masters return after their debut appearance in October. They're joined by Sabajaq boss Warboy, the creative force behind a host of parties from All You Can Eat to Night Train, Joe Roberts, one half of the Radio 1 supported Local Group, and Egg regular guest Benjamin Buttons.
Inaugerating the Take It To Church room, new home to all things soulful and disco, are Kristy Harper, Bisoux and Frankco Harris, with live performances from Ruth Brown, Shona Carmen and Fi McCluskey, and live percussion from Holly Madge to add to the joyful vibes.
As ever, Sabajaq features a cast of cutting-edge dancers including FKA Twigs collaborator Benjamin Milan alongside Gianna Gi, Maleficent Martini and Foxglove.
