beat at secret location Leeds (EXTRA DATE ADDED)
beat - EXTRA DATE ADDED!
March 22nd 2013 Leeds, Secret Location
We have been blown away by demand fior the beat idea and dinner tickets for Saturday 23rd March sold out in 5 days. We have added an extra date so people that want the beat experience can come.
beat is a brand new project from Yorkshire chef of the year Tom Van Zeller and legendary Leeds DJ Ralph Lawson. beat will bring together food, drink and music in a series of one off events in bespoke locations, starting in Leeds on March 23rd. The Club will present a pop-up restaurant, Loft Party and rooftop bar all in the same space. As Lawson explains it -
“We want to create a place where we would like to go out ourselves. I travel all over the world as a DJ and have the privilege to eat at many great restaurants. It was really inspirational to see what was going on in cities like London and New York with food and I felt a city like Leeds deserved to have a better scene. It is a very similar feeling to when we started the back to basics club for house music in 1991 – we were tired of driving over to Manchester for the Hacienda and wanted our own place in town.”
Lawson went on to win several international awards as the resident DJ at basics as it became a clubbing institution and also runs the internationally respected 2020Vision label. Van Zeller is also no stranger to success with a long list of plaudits for his restaurant in Harrogate; including 3 Best Chef awards (including Hi Life & Oliver awards). His restaurant has 2AA Rosettes and recently won best restaurant in the Good Food guide.
The pair were introduced through a mutual friend and recording artist for Lawson’s 2020Vision record label.
“Tom was playing some of my mixes in the kitchen and I was going to his restaurant, so we shared an interest for each others skills from the start. TvZ’s cooking blew me away and he was into my music. We tried one party together and it was superb so we got our thinking caps on that more people could be into the experience we can create together.”
Pop-up has become an overused word lately, especially in London, where pubs now boast pop-up restaurants and there are even pop-up launderettes. But beat is true to the idea with unique individual events in the coolest spaces only. Each event will have it’s own special three course menu devised and personally cooked by Van Zeller and great care has gone into production, decor and sound. Lawson will play a 3-hour loft party set on the opening night, digging deep into his 25 years of vinyl collecting.
Tristan Da Cunha completes the picture with his renowned versatile DJ skills, fresh from winning best small club at the DJ mag Best of British awards for his work at The Garage in Leeds.
A feminine touch was also needed for the project so Jane Lawson completes the team with an eye for production and design. She explains her motivation,
“We want to make it the best bar, best restaurant and best party experience you can have under one roof. You enter through the door and we don’t let you go until you’re fed, watered and danced your socks off!”
The venue for March 23rd boasts a top floor panoramic bar with superb views over the city. The bar opens at 7pm with dinner served at 8pm, the loft party kicks off from 10pm until 2am.
Tickets including TvZ’s 3 course dinner and loft party entrance are £30. Loft party entry only is priced at £10.
Please note - beat is a communal dining experience, however we will try to seat groups and friends together. For all seating requests and information contact
