It’s nearly the end of the year, and 2012 has been something of a classic from a house music perspective. As genre restrictions fall to the wayside and forward thinking music collides with heritage focused revivals of the genre’s golden years, it’s been a time for exciting music. Circus has been at the forefront of this purple patch, and for the first of two December dates (the other being the annual Boxing Day bonanza to cap off the year), Saturday 1st sees a brilliantly diverse array of talent under The Masque’s hallowed roof.
The headliner is a very special show from Laurent Garnier and his LBS project. If you had to pick one guest who during the ten year tenure of Circus best defined the whole philosophy of the club, then that honour would probably fall at Garnier’s feet. Since his first gig back in Easter 2004, the Gallic crusader’s eclectic approach has been fully representative of the stylistic shifts and turns Circus has been a part of across house and techno. His LBS project has re-defined the concept of merging improvised live performance and DJing, being a revelation since its inception. But such is Laurent’s surge to move forward that he will be retiring the project in its prime at the end of 2012, with two special dates for Circus over the weekend providing the final ever performances in London and Liverpool. It’s sure to be an extra special occasion in the Masque’s Theatre as Liverpool bids farewell to LBS.
Another man who has blown 2012 apart and who needs little introduction is Yousef, his triumphant finale for the year climaxing with his brilliantly received ‘A Product of Your Environment’ gaining rave reviews across the dance music media. His 2nd artist album is indicative of how far Yousef has evolved, far away from being just another DJ; now he encompasses promotion, production and remixes, as well as nurturing and developing new talent through his own label, Circus Recordings. His latest Radio 1 Essential Mix also went out on Friday 19th October to an incredible reaction, check it out here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01n93np
Joining Laurent and Yousef is a selection of star turns from Circus heroes present and future. Bristolian bad man Julio Bashmore returns, the DJ on the strength of a thoroughly epic 2012 which has seen him established as one of the most inspiring and forward thinking artists of current standing. Another live turn comes in the shape of the full blooded house assassin Guti, whose razor sharp grooves infused with Latin flavours have been a fixture everywhere from Ibiza to Indonesia this year. Leeds based HotSince82 also joins the party, the Yorkshire native a worthy addition to the city’s long standing canon of house music stars. He has just remixed Yousef’s Beg to great effect, now out on Defected, following excellent releases on Off Recordings and Noir Music. Resident Scott Lewis will also be in the building, a lynchpin of the club.
Circus Recordings will also be showcasing their strength in depth as well at the event, the label the manifestation of Yousef and the club night’s artistic beliefs and morals. Playing will be Pete Tong favourite and Dirtybird starlet Tom Flynn, Circus resident Lewis Boardman – fresh from playing at ADE – has just released his full Circus Recordings EP, How Does It Feel, following previous releases on Souvenir and NRK. Acid Mondays and Makes No Sense complete the party.
