Thursday 14th February - Grandmaster Melle Mel & Scorpio
Over the past few months Beat Bar has brought you some of the finest names to grace the underground hip hop scene over the past couple of decades and for Valentines day we go even further back, right back to one of the founders of the music that has defined a generation, Melle Mel.
In celebration of Melle Mel's historic hip hop classic, “The Message”, turning 30 this year we have a very special and a very rare appearance from the first hip hop group to be inducted into not only the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame but also the Grammy Hall Of Fame. "The Message" went platinum in less than a month of it's release and went on to become arguably one of the greatest records in hip-hop history. It was the first hip-hop record ever to be added to the United States National Archive of Historic Recordings and the first Hip Hop record inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. We could go on all day about Melle Mel's achievements and what he's done for Hip Hop but frankly, we could be here for days on end. Quite simply this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see a true legend.
Sunday 10th March - DJ Premier
It is an absolute pleasure and a dream come true to welcome the incredible DJ PREMIER to Beat Bar.
As one half of Gang Starr and arguably the greatest Hip Hop producer of all time, Preemo, as he's also known, has created classics for the likes of Nas, Big L, Jay-Z, KRS One, Mos Def, Rakim, Biggie...I could go on and on! This man's production style epitomizes the New York sound that dominated Hip Hop in the 90's with his raw and rugged style that still influences artists to this very day.
Premier was born in Houston, Texas but it wasn't until his teenage years when he moved to Brooklyn, New York where he met Guru that his music career really began to take off. In 1989 Premier joined Guru's Gang Starr and later that year released their debut album 'No More Mr. Nice Guy'. A year later they were signed to Chrysalis Records and, as they say, the rest is history...
In 1994 Hip Hop had one of it's golden years and Premier had a huge hand to play in thatt, in addition to dropping another Gang Starr classic, Hard To Earn, his productions appeared on five-star, all-time classics by the likes of Nas (Illmatic), The Notorious B.I.G. (Ready To Die) and Jeru The Damaja (The Sun Rises In The East). Since the Premier has gone onto cement his place in Hip Hop history as THE greatest producer. He's joined by one of today's best beatmakers and DJs, Statik Selektah, who has worked with the likes of Mobb Deep, Q-Tip, MOP, Action Bronson, Mac Miller and countless others.
This is an extremely rare performance and if you have any interest in Hip Hop music in the slightest then this is one that you will not want to miss!
