Over the past couple of years, Leeds based promoters Butter Side Up have been steadily growing a following of discerning music heads in the city with a string of bookings including the likes of Theo Parrish, Mike Huckaby, Hunee, Patrice Scott, DJ Deep, Soulphiction and more. April 2014 however sees a slight shift in their recent booking pattern as they return their gaze from Detroit back to the UK with Glasgow's finest in JD Twitch and JG Wilkes aka Optimo (Espacio) playing a much anticipated four hour set in the Wire basement.
Together the pairing held their infamous Optimo Sunday Night party at Glasgow's Sub Club between 1997 and 2010 which saw the duo throw out the rule book, booking punk bands, folk bands and more, always sandwiched between their famously eclectic DJ sets. From week to week the themes of the Optimo parties would ebb and flow between near enough every genre under the sun, focussing in on everything from dub and reggae to jazz and funk to acid house. As JD put it...
"I didn't care whether it would work or not, or whether anyone would go, it was just something I had to do," says Twitch. "I love DJing with all my heart but at this point I was so bored with seamless mixing - it was all just too obvious, too predictable and too easy - that I had to do something to preserve my (in)sanity."
With their weekly Optimo parties in Glasgow no longer on the calendar, the pairing can be found propping up the decks all over the place with upcoming gigs including Snowboming (Austria), Speelhof (Belgium), Nachtdigital (Germany) and a few dates across the pond in the US – including another special b2b with their Boiler Room buddy Move D.
No strangers to Leeds, Optimo last appeared in the city this January for mono_cult's annual New Years Day party and brought a set that blew the rest of what was a heavy hitting lineup (featuring Jackmaster, Mano Le Tough, Levon Vincent, Midland and Anthony Naples) out of the water. We've still got Marc Houle's Bay Of Figs ringing in our ears...
Their sets are the result of 25 years of dedicated digging, DJing and complete musical obsession. Expect to hear four hours of the weird and the wonderful, the obscure and unrecognised and a fair few bangers to boot.
Butter Side Up with Optimo tickets are on sale now. Early bird tickets are now sold out with 1st Release Tickets also selling fast.
