After a lengthy summer touring international festivals, the Butter Side Up crew are back in Leeds. After their friends and family party at the end of August, which saw a selection of fine DJs from Leeds and further afar (including the BSU residents) take to their spiritual home of Wire, they are now ready and rolling towards their birthday celebration that is welcoming one very talented individual, Motor City Drum Ensemble.
Danilo Plessow, the mind behind MCDE, was born in 1985 and began making electronic music at the age of 11 under a series of other names creating house, broken beat and disco music heavily influenced by jazz, soul, funk and hip-hop. Eventually going with his house roots, the name Motor City Drum Ensemble was spawned from the name of the town he lived in, Stuttgart (being the Motor City with sports cars as its main exports) where he moved during his childhood.
As MCDE, Danilo has crafted a series of original tracks and remixes, some of which are part of a now highly revered series for vinyl collectors and DJs alike. This ‘Raw Cuts’ series consists of a number of untitled tracks that bleed funk and a soulful attitude awash with intuitive samples, some of which are from more commercial records whilst some have been dug out of the deepest record boxes Plessow could find. These 12”s have been released on his own label MCDE, an imprint that has also staged releases for the likes of Laurent Garnier, The Creative Swing Alliance, Marcellus Pittman, The Jayson Brothers and The Revenge amongst others.
As a DJ too, Motor City Drum Ensemble is nothing short of fantastic. Having passionately collected records for such a long time whilst perfecting his ability to effortlessly blend this empathically soulful sound, his performances are pure gems, time after time. Being an adventurous character, flat performances are a serious no-no for this guy, as you will experience when he takes you down with melancholy soul music of the deepest variety before sending you into a frenzy of intense Chicago inspired house and squelchy acid.
Having had both Motor City Drum Ensemble’s Boiler Room podcasts (check them if you haven’t) playing loud and proud in the Ticket Arena office on many an occasion, we are very excited to see him on the line up for Butter Side Up and it’s no overstatement when we say you can’t afford to miss him either.
