Seminal American hip hop group De La Soul will be performing in Birmingham this coming spring, taking to O2 Institute Birmingham on Friday 3rd March. Now approaching their thirtieth year as a group, the Long Island trio are among the most respected names in hip hop, known in particular for their creative use of sampling and humorous lyricism, and will make for an entertaining evening in Birmingham.
De La Soul had been earmarked as one of the best hip hop groups around as early as 1989, when their debut album earned the praise of in the know critics and plenty of success in the album charts. Regularly making ‘greatest albums’ lists, 3 Feet High and Rising has achieved impressive longevity as a hip hop favourite, and was one of the foundation pillars of the alternative rap movement that sought to counteract gangsta rap’s increasingly influence in 1990s America. Ushering in a more positive, light-hearted and experimental side to hip hop, the album set the tone for a band and a movement that would draw from a huge range of sources to create blurred lines between hip hop and other formerly separate genres. This has helped De La Soul reach deity status among hip hop circles the world over.
Recent years have seen De La Soul continue to make big waves, with a collaboration with Gorillaz on hit track “Feel Good Inc.” in 2005, their seventh LP coming out in 2012 and album number eight coming out last August, earning rave reviews as it debuted at 12 on the Billboard 200. Now touring with new material in hand, the trio will be cooking up something special as they head to the Midlands for an evening of slick beats and neat quips.
