BBC 1Xtra opened its doors to a DJ superhero once again last week, with Major Lazer’s Diplo throwing himself into a two hour long mix for the latest episode of his Diplo and friends series. Having made a head-spinning ascent up the dance music ladder over the last decade or so, Diplo has become one of the biggest names out there, producing for artists as globally recognised as Gwen Stefani, Madonna, Shakira, Justin Bieber, and Beyoncé. Also a close collaborator and friend of fellow American dubstep mogul Skrillex, Diplo occupies a space in the dance music world that has room for only the biggest and most successful DJs.
As always with Diplo mixes, this one ventures from one genre to another, with hip-hop, house and EDM all getting plenty of airtime. Previous episodes in the series have seen the likes of Benzi, Danny L Harle, Swick more getting busy behind the decks, but Diplo will have been more than happy to take the reins on this one after several weeks of watching his pals have all the fun.
