[Event Review] Bonobo (Live) at Canal Mills

[Event Review] Bonobo (Live) at Canal Mills

After a sensational tour across Europe, Simon Green aka Bonobo arrived back in the UK with a big treat in store. The extremely excited Leeds audience waited with anticipation for a live performance of his outstanding new album North Borders, released earlier this year. The versatile venue Canal Mills adapted its layout accordingly, creating the perfect space for this spectacular performance.

The supporting act Dauwd demonstrated his live production skills with style. He got the crowd going with his powerful, often progressive tracks, similar to Bonobo in respect of their deeply textured sounds. If the crowd were not excited enough to see Bonobo he took it to another level, he was particularly appropriate and really got the ball rolling.

Bonobo then took to the stage, opening with Cirrus his first single off the album, exceeding the audience's expectations, as he did progressively throughout the night. The live band enhanced the details of his sound to a tee so every member of the crowd could appreciate the flares and delicacies. Like any true professional Bonobo gave the people exactly what they wanted to hear, not just confining himself to North Borders but delivering tracks from Days to Come, Black Sands and even as far back as Animal Magic. Highlights specifically were Recurring and Emkay.

Simon Green was clearly in the frontline, being a master on both bass and buttons, but it was impossible to ignore the genius skills of the other band members. To mention a few, the beautiful Szjerdene made the audience tremble with her alluring voice and the rhythmic expertise of drummer Jack Baker was incredible. His complex and intricate solo was not only flawless but exhilarating as judged by the audience's reaction! When they all played together it took it to another level. What added to all this wonderful music was the excellent and diverse lighting arrangement. The stage became a new character with each song, seamlessly floating from one to the next really enhancing the vibe of the night.

When the band left the stage, the crowd erupted begging for more. Returning to the stage Bonobo closed with Pieces, ending the night with smiles all around.
