Last Saturday saw none other than Fabric legend, Craig Richards, make the trip out of London for a very special, rare appearance in the North’s house music Mecca, Leeds. For many this would be their first opportunity to catch one of Craig’s sets and for others it was a chance to see how he would approach his headline slot. The buzz about the city was incredible in the build up, and rightly so as the night turned out to be one of the best on memory.
Arriving just after midnight we were able to catch the end of resident, Brinsley Kazak’s warm up set. It seems he had calculated what is often an awkward slot to fill perfectly, as things were already pretty hectic on the Mint Club dance floor.
It wasn’t long before man of the moment, Trevino was behind the decks and the club was well and truly going off. The turnout was incredible as Marcus Kaye, AKA Trevino played through a first class selection, featuring some of his own productions which have been finding there way into everyone’s record bags of late.
By the time Craig Richards popped up in the booth, sporting one of his impressively flowery shirts, the club was heaving and ready to erupt but as always Craig’s courage and confidence in his own selections was ever present as he jumped into a beatless intro, laden with laboured soft jazz chords and sexy vocals (a track that still has me searching desperately for an ID). The crowd responded wildly as arms were carelessly thrown into the air, it was only a couple of minutes into the set and he already had the crowd in the palm of his hand. The set that followed was a master class in true, pure, DJing – and to apply a highly overused term; a journey.
Come 7am there was still a loyal following on the dance floor, testament to Craig’s brilliance and the success of the night. ‘The Nothing Special’? I don’t think so.
