Louche with Ben UFO & San Soda
Saturday 16th February 2013
Mint Club, Leeds
Residents of Leeds are totally spoilt for choice when it comes to club nights. As tempting as it might be to argue that the scene is oversaturated, when you’re treated to world class DJs pretty much every weekend it seems churlish to complain about it. Similarly, whilst the musical landscape of the Leeds scene might have grown almost alarmingly quickly over the last few years, it has proved itself to be a fertile breeding ground for British talent. Louche – promoters who, living up to their name, have established themselves as purveyors of laid-back decadence – were kind enough to bring back Ben UFO back up to the town in which the renowned Hessle Audio triumvirate first got together.
Support on the night came from Belgian Red Bull Music Academy graduate San Soda, who is probably best known for the beautiful purity of ‘It’s You’, and his mix was sprinkled with gems. Although there were a couple of technicals and he took a while to get going, once he got into a nice groove there were some really interesting choices, with a satisfying foray into some more acidic tracks. But of course the crowd was full of Ben UFO devotees salivating for the main man himself to grace the decks. Rather than catalysing some kind of explosive energy, his appearance inspired the kind of smug satisfaction that descends upon an audience who know that they’re in for a brilliant night.
True to form he didn’t disappoint, playing a relatively chilled, but nonetheless utterly exquisite selection. As is often the case it was a cleverly orchestrated mix of lush house, spacey techno and golden era garage, with a few surprises here and there. When you’re as dedicated a DJ as Ben UFO is, the crowd belong to you and your buttons. You can do whatever you want to them, even if that happens to be inducing a 5am Whitney Houston singalong. So all in all, it was another excellent set – exactly what we were expecting.
