Monday 28th April
The Faversham, Leeds
The hottest names in UK garage took to the stage for ‘On the Wave[‘s]’ night at the Faversham on Monday 28th April, ready to give students one last blasting before the terror of exam season begins. Its an unfortunate time of year, a time people are filled with anxiety and stress but Wookie and DJ Q provided some very light relief, with their skittery beats and pounding basslines, for those of us still raring to party.
DJ Q smashed his set with his synthetic, funky basslines and R’n’b influenced melodies. With sharp control of the decks he produced a great amount of suspense and engagement. The lights flashed all around perfectly in tune with the bouncing sounds DJ Q created. A big highlight for the crowd was when DJ Q brought out the classic Piper track, ‘Do You Really Like It’. As always it went down a treat. It was clear DJ Q was influenced by such a variety of styles from dubstep, to house, to chart classics, to soul, but this never became over the top, his abilities brought them subtly together.
Next up the undeniably skilled Wookie with his soulful sounds got the crowd going even more. From his jumping breakbeats to his smooth rolling bass lines everything was spot on. He sent the crowd wild when mixing More Fire Crew’s ‘Oi’. The set gave a nod back to reggae grooves and drum and bass rhythms, the sounds hovering in the room and captivating us all in; the epitome of what is so great about UK garage.
Overall, it was a great night, despite the disappointingly small turnout - put down to students revising for the looming exams less than a month away. At a less crucial time the Faversham would surely have been packed. However, for those of us there, we were certainly riding ‘the wave’ and enjoying the heart-warming sounds that the greatest UK garage artists produce.
