Last Thursday saw house music royalty come to Leeds, as Teknicolor brought in their third birthday in style with non other than Kerri Chandler. The hype for the event had been huge over the past few weeks with ticket allocations disappearing in minutes. The Teknicolor team have been bringing some incredible bookings over the past year or so to Mint including Dan Ghenacia, Davide Squillace, Ryan Elliot and loads more but they had really outdone themselves with this event; securing an extended 5 hour set from Kerri. Not bad for a Thursday in Yorkshire eh?
Arriving at around midnight, we were able to catch the end of Benson Herbert and Leo Picking (AKA Voyeur)’s opening set. As a recent signing to Kerri’s Madtech records, I was excited to hear what the pair had to offer and they did not disappoint bringing a relentless selection of deep, techy, house grooves. Looking back, I wish we’d have arrived a little earlier to take in a bit more of their set in a more relaxed environment, before the club began to really pack out.
Deeper into the night, and Kerri was on top form for the full five hours spinning a range of styles and grooves to a Teknicolor crowd that were even more up for it than normal, and if you’ve been down to Mint on a Thursday over the past couple of years you’ll know the significance of what that means. Playing old against new with the likes of Octave One - Black Water and Derrick May’s Strings Of Life sitting next to tracks such as Storm Queen - It Goes On and Julio Bashmore’s Au Seve, Kerri had the room in a frenzy. Personal highlights included Inspiration and the Your Surrounded Vocal Mix of Bar A Thym - unsurprisingly both from the pen of the man himself. There were a couple of selections that had myself and others asking questions (namely; Julio Bashmore - Au Seve and Hot Natured - Benediction) however, on reflection, although they may not be to everyone’s taste and not tracks you would expect a DJ such as Kerri Chandler to play, they went down a storm and he’d simply read the crowd to perfection.
Come 6am the club was packed and still bouncing, and by all accounts the afters was pretty special too (shame I had to swerve it for work the next morning). Happy Birthday Teknicolor, here’s to the next three.
For those feeling the monday blues, make sure you check out Kerri's mix for Teknicolor favourite, Heidi's BBC Radio 1 show below, that actually went out last Thursday whilst Teknicolor was rocking Mint Club to the ground.
