Teknicolor : Love House Music with Darius Syrossian
Thursday 13th Feb
Mint Club, Leeds
The latest edition of Teknicolor's Thursday residency at Mint Club saw Leeds welcome back local boy, Darius Syrossian, as he took to the decks for a special extended for hour set under the lights.
It’s been a successful past few years for Darius, winning DJ Mags Best New Producer in 2012 off the back of putting out some huge releases, with tracks on or forthcoming soon on labels such as VIVa MUSiC, 8bit, We Dig Music, Monique Music, Natural Rhythm and Area Remote.
If one thing's been lost in the explosion of DJ mania over the past 15 years, it’s the art of warming up. Before house music arrived in the UK, the DJ turned up at the start of the night along with the bar staff and played until close. Nowadays most young DJs toil away in their bedroom with nothing in mind but a two-hour peak time set. However, this wasn’t the case as fellow local Leeds DJ, FiNN aka Luke Finlayson, was called upon to warm up for Syrossian. This young emerging talent has been navigating the Leeds scene for some time now now and FiNN did a great job warming up in my eyes as he showed he’s learnt the subtle art of atmosphere – guiding the crowd through the start of the evening and getting everyone’s dancing shoes on, yet still leaving plenty of room for Darius to decide which direction he wishes to take once he steps on. Definitely one to look out for.
1.00 am came around in no time and it was time for Darius to step up, taking off where FiNN left off, with a selection of bass heavy true house tracks, which got the crowd jumping from the off set. Darius showed he’s got the delicate skill of guiding an evening through many moods, often changing the tempo and building a great sense of atmosphere. Never afraid of mixing genres as he delved into some tech house tracks as the evening wore on, as well as mixing it up between the old school and the current as he showed when he teased the crowd with snippets of Wildchild – Renegade Master before dropping some Chicago bumpin’ rowdiness with his own hugely successful collaboration with Hector Couto released on Hot Creations, Darius Syrossian & Hector Couto – House is House.
Not long after this was a highlight of the night as Darius slowed the tempo, switched to a more melodic key and turned the fader on which quickly triggered a real ‘hands in the air’ moment. As tension built, the crowd knew something big was coming and Darius delivered by dropping the massive Todd Terry – Bounce To The Beat (Leon Remix), the moment electrified thanks to a burst of fluorescent lights which exploded from the famous disco panel roof. It’s moments like these you quickly start to realise why year after year Mint is regarded as one of the top clubs in Europe.
