Since arriving in Leeds, Wax:on has been at the forefront of nights to attend, hosting some of the best electronic music events around. On the 19th of January at Canal Mills in Leeds they once again did not fail to please. With an epic line up including People Get Real, Maxxi Soundsystem, Floating Points, Huxley and Jamie xx, it was too good to resist!

The feeling when we entered was cool with dark moody and abstract décor, being a new venue I was very keen to experience it. We made our way to the bar to collect the first round of drinks and decided to soak in some of the atmosphere, seated on lounge like benches until the booming of the bass from the next rooms was too much to hold us back.

Room 2 was the first one we entered, catching the last half hour of People Get Real. The room was already packed, they had really kicked the night off in style setting a hard driven beat that no one could refuse. Feelings were high in anticipation for Maxxi Soundsystem as more people flooded in. Sam Watt (Maxxi Soundsystem) very quickly picked the room up to the next level, throwing out the brilliant tune; Stella's Way. We found ourselves right near the front and the bass on this song was just incredible! The night was in full swing and the crowd ate up everything Sam threw at us. A great part of his set for me was when he dropped the killer song Rachel Row - Follow The Step (Kink Beat Mix). When the vocals were brought in it really reigned in the crowd allowing a moment to breath and feel the music, only for a moment however, until the bass kicked back into full flow and the silence was broken. I love it when an artist can really show his talent controlling the audience.

The great thing about this night in general was the lengths of sets, they were all a healthy 2 hours giving plenty of time to either vary the artists seen from the main room to room 2 or to really get involved from start to finish with one particular set.

It was getting near to the end of Maxxi Soundsystem’s set so we made our way over to the Main room in preparation for Jamie xx.

Jamie XX, a member of The XX and a massive part of XL Recordings made a name for himself outside the band in 2009, and now in 2013 he is still a brilliant growing artist. His set ran seamlessly from Youandewan who had already created a strong tech house vibe for the previous crowd. Jamie Smith AKA Jamie XX is well known for his remixes of The XX, Adele and Gil Scott-Heron tracks, normally creating a dreamy atmospheric vibe, however on this occasion he also showed off his talent to mix a hard-hitting bass with some great running beats. The hard techno house feel he had decided to continue with really kept us moving, there was never a dull moment! With the set going great he started to show us a glimmer of the truly magical syncopated steel drum sounds we all know and love. First introducing the brilliant Bloom - Jamie XX Rework Part 3, and then later on, ultimately for me the most provoking drop, being The XX – Reconsider Remix. The atmosphere around me immediately stilled leaving a dreamy dazed silence, with everyone just embracing the song. The bend in tone before dropping the bass line again caused a roar from the crowd. It was truly memorable.

Before I knew it, Jamie XX had come to an end and it was 4am. It was now Floating Points and they were just what we needed, a perfectly timed pick me up after a whirlwind with Jamie. Their lighthearted beat kept us going well past 5am. Mixing some first class disco on top of a heavy bass, they had us dancing at our best with a great Detroit Emeralds - Feel The Need mix. It was a fantastic up beat, feel good way to end the night!
