Album Of The Week: A$AP Rocky - Testing

Album Of The Week: A$AP Rocky - Testing

With the sweetest of sounds coming from the speakers of the Ticket Arena office it would be mighty selfish of us to keep them to ourselves, so we thought we’d let you in on what our staff use to soundtrack a hard day’s work. Now a weekly feature with the intent of bringing your attention to wonderful new sounds every Tuesday, our Album Of The Week looks at releases from the best in the game, whether fresh new acts about to hit the big time or established artists reminding the world of their continued talent. Simply put, it’s just the best in music that we think you should hear.

One of the biggest names in American hip hop has dropped his third full length record, completing a trilogy in mainstream beats and bars. With features from the likes of T.I, Kid Cudi, FKA Twigs, Skepta, Frank Ocean, Kodak Black, French Montana and event an unexpected sampling and rework of Moby’s 1999 track ‘Porcelain’, as well as a lovely Lauryn Hill sample, Testing is a fine example of the rappers versatile style. Album opener ‘Distorted Records’ leads listeners in with thumping bass which is so blatant it’s even referenced within Rocky’s “I can feel the bass” rhetoric, while following track ‘A$AP Forever REMIX’ sees a collaboration between T.I Kid Cudi and those 90s samples from Moby, which shouldn’t work, but the stark contrast between the trio’s hard lyrics and the ambient, swooning strings and ethereal looped vocals makes for a stand out track on the list of fifteen. Other highlights include the FKA Twigs featuring track ‘Fukk Sleep’, the grime influenced ‘Praise The Lord (Da Shine)’ collaborative single with grime done Skepta himself, and there’s of course an honourable mention for the album finale, with an acoustic melody, and vocals from Frank Ocean taking over as Rocky slips in between with his distinctive lyrical skill.

ASAP Rocky heads to Parklife Festival in Manchester’s Heaton Park on Saturday 9th June alongside the likes of The xx, Lorde, NERD, Sampha, Giggs, Bugzy Malone and more.
