With the sweetest of sounds coming from the speakers of the Ticket Arena office it would be mighty selfish of us to keep them to ourselves, so we thought we’d let you in on what our staff use to soundtrack a hard day’s work. Now a weekly feature with the intent of bringing your attention to wonderful new sounds every Monday, our Album Of The Week looks at releases from the best in the game, whether fresh new acts about to hit the big time or established artists reminding the world of their continued talent. Simply put, it’s just the best in music that we think you should hear.
Their first full-length release in three years, and second since two original members departed, Black Lips are more ‘hoedown’ than ‘shoot-up’ nowadays; leaving behind the scuzzy, sloppy aesthetics that defined the Atlanta five-piece for nearly two decades, Sing In A World That’s Falling Apart sees the band embrace inspiration from slack-jawed, bourbon-saturated country outlaws. Still fascinated with the people on the fringes of society, as is standard procedure, Black Lips have in no way lost any of their quirks, rather amped-up their weirder tendencies with plenty of harmonica, glam-tinged riffs (‘Angola Rodeo’), and even Dylan-esque world weary tales of life on the road (‘Get It On Time’). With shared vocal duties, additional band members, and buckets of energy, the ‘former’ garage-rock band whose reputation was built on raucous live shows feel rejuvenated under their new bar-dwelling, country-boogie guise.
