Album Of The Week: Friction - Connections

Album Of The Week: Friction - Connections

With the sweetest of sounds coming from the speakers of the Ticket Arena office it would be mighty selfish of us to keep them to ourselves, so we thought we’d let you in on what our staff use to soundtrack a hard day’s work. Now a weekly feature with the intent of bringing your attention to wonderful new sounds every Tuesday, our Album Of The Week looks at releases from the best in the game, whether fresh new acts about to hit the big time or established artists reminding the world of their continued talent. Simply put, it’s just the best in music that we think you should hear.

With over a decade making music under his belt, it’s tough to believe that ‘Connections’ is Friction’s very first album, yet here we are - celebrating the Brighton DJ and producer’s debut by giving the recognition it deserves with our Album Of The Week slot. As the founder of the highly regarded and respected Elevate Records, on top of the host of BBC Radio 1Xtra’s drum and bass dedicated show for six mighty years, you’d expect Friction’s twelve track project to be an exploration of the deepest depths of the genre. Luckily, that seems to be exactly what it is, as Friction leaves no stone unturned in his scrutinous mission to display his vast knowledge of all influenced genres, with jungle, ragga, dub and more making some stark features. With guests including JP Cooper, Rothwell, Metrik, Doktor and more, Connections also adds in other personalities, with some silky vocals as well as some gritty emceeing contracting to his polished productions of slick kick drums, warbling bass and even the addition of some strings and brass. Friction is an artist already in possession of a long list of awards, but we can expect a few more heading his way following this release.

Friction helps open the mighty 2018 season of In:Motion on Friday 28th September, alongside David Rodigan, Redlight and more.

Shepton Mallet’s Westfest also hosts Friction this year, taking place at the royal Bath & West Showground on Saturday 27th October.

Friction also offers live versions of this release, as he heads to Birmingham’s Amusement 13 Nightclub on Saturday 29th September, before heading to Brighton’s Concorde 2 on Friday 16th November.
