With the sweetest of sounds coming from the speakers of the Ticket Arena office it would be mighty selfish of us to keep them to ourselves, so we thought we’d let you in on what our staff use to soundtrack a hard day’s work. Now a weekly feature with the intent of bringing your attention to wonderful new sounds every Tuesday, our Album Of The Week looks at releases from the best in the game, whether fresh new acts about to hit the big time or established artists reminding the world of their continued talent. Simply put, it’s just the best in music that we think you should hear.
While the world is well aware of her selecting and mixing talents, as demonstrated in the high-in-demand appearances at clubs and festivals on an international scale, Jayda G has only teased her production skillset through a steady slew of releases, until now. Unleashing her album Significant Changes onto the grateful ears of electronic music fans, the Canadian DJ and producer not only showcases her productional prowess through these eleven tracks, but also cleverly combines her two passions, electronic music and sea mammals. You read that correctly - and it’s not a typo - last year the musician and academic submitted her masters thesis on the effects of certain chemicals on an enderaged species of Orca and so she’s managed to sneak in conscientious commentary on these issues into her music. From the less subtle sampling of biologist Misty MacDuffee commenting ‘Why are these whales threatened and what are we going to do about it?’ over a thumping danceable beat, the more ambient use of actual orca cries amongst an instrumental interlude - Jayda G has raised some poignant points, but has them juxtaposed with some pulsating four-to-the-floor anthems making this album a truly eclectic display of her versatile abilities.
Jayda G will be delivering her favoured tracks at this year’s Lovebox Festival, taking over London’s Gunnersbury Park on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th July.
