With the sweetest of sounds coming from the speakers of the Ticket Arena office it would be mighty selfish of us to keep them to ourselves, so we thought we’d let you in on what our staff use to soundtrack a hard day’s work. Now a weekly feature with the intent of bringing your attention to wonderful new sounds every Tuesday, our Album Of The Week looks at releases from the best in the game, whether fresh new acts about to hit the big time or established artists reminding the world of their continued talent. Simply put, it’s just the best in music that we think you should hear.
Following the news that Jeff Mills has launched his Axis sub-label, Str Mrkd, the techno pioneer and powerhouse has unleashed a four track EP of the same name (pronounced ‘Star Marked’ and it’s namesake taken from the DJs 2014 track), onto unexpecting but delighted techno fans. The 12-inch feature includes four new tracks that, in true to Mills’ style, display his own brand of piercing and provocative Detroit techno - from the thumping, acid tinted beats of ‘Albali’ to the more ambient and minimal noises emanating from track ‘Patterns In Nature’, the infamous creator of the likes of ‘The Bells’ proves that his production is still paramount in the techno world.
Although digital copies of these predictably powerful tracks are yet to make it online in full, snippets are floating around for anybody who’s curiosity is getting the better of them, and it’s worth gearing yourself up for such sounds, as they’re just about as unworldly as you could expect - a perfect balance between surrealist sci-fi and seriously grounding dance-worthy beats.
Almost two decades since Jeff Mills and Mike Banks set up their Underground Resistance record label and it’s about to make it’s Bristol debut as a showcase of the Detroit techno label heads to Motion on Saturday 2nd February with Marcel Dettmann, Gerd Janson, Octo Octa, Peach and more.
