With the sweetest of sounds coming from the speakers of the Ticket Arena office it would be mighty selfish of us to keep them to ourselves, so we thought we’d let you in on what our staff use to soundtrack a hard day’s work. Now a weekly feature with the intent of bringing your attention to wonderful new sounds every Tuesday, our Album Of The Week looks at releases from the best in the game, whether fresh new acts about to hit the big time or established artists reminding the world of their continued talent. Simply put, it’s just the best in new music that we think you should hear.
From being named NME’s ‘Best New Artist’ of 2016, to being unexpectedly sampled on Kendrick Lamar’s single, ‘LUST’, as part of the rap giant’s seminal album earlier this year, Rat Boy has achieved quite a bit by the tender age of 21. Now, the release of his full length debut shows that this young lad is in no way stopping as the versatility displays that he continues to grow and develop into what makes an indie great. Filling the hole in the hearts of those Jamie T fans who were yearning for something similar, Rat Boy offers a familiar sound of social commentary with his charming London accent intact. SCUM is an easy listening mix of indie riffs, spoken word style venomous vocal delivery with elements of a number of genres and styles, including ska, pop, grunge and more.
Rat Boy hits the stage at this year’s Leeds Festival, taking place across August Bank Holiday weekend and he’ll also be offering live versions of his unique take on indie at this year’s Bestival at Lulworth Castle, from September 7th until 10th.
