With the sweetest of sounds coming from the speakers of the Ticket Arena office it would be mighty selfish of us to keep them to ourselves, so we thought we’d let you in on what our staff use to soundtrack a hard day’s work. Now a weekly feature with the intent of bringing your attention to wonderful new sounds every Tuesday, our Album Of The Week looks at releases from the best in the game, whether fresh new acts about to hit the big time or established artists reminding the world of their continued talent. Simply put, it’s just the best in music that we think you should hear.
We know the January blues have hit hard, the good news is that the first month of the year is nearly up, and the even better news is that house hero Riva Starr has dropped a brand new album, which is able to transport listeners to a much warmer place. Fusing his house staple sound with African elements, the aptly named ‘Adventures in Drums’ is just that, as samples from a versatile mix of drum sounds - ranging from rhythmic bongos to the typical house, high-tempo hi-hatt - dominate the Crosstown Rebels released project. Although percussion takes front and centre, it’s difficult to ignore the group chants, the foreign tongue vocals and clear African influences as Starr seems to have swapped his hedonist haven of the White Isle for the white sands of the Sahara - which is perfect, because ‘Adventures in Drums’ is packing some real heat.
Riva Starr headlines Club Mission in Leeds on Friday 26th January alongside Pawsa, Tuff London and Jhonsson for the debut of brand new weird and warped club night Teatro.
