Album Of The Week: Ross From Friends - Family Portrait

Album Of The Week: Ross From Friends - Family Portrait

Stefan Gandhi | Features & Interviews

With the sweetest of sounds coming from the speakers of the Ticket Arena office it would be mighty selfish of us to keep them to ourselves, so we thought we’d let you in on what our staff use to soundtrack a hard day’s work. Now a weekly feature with the intent of bringing your attention to wonderful new sounds every Tuesday, our Album Of The Week looks at releases from the best in the game, whether fresh new acts about to hit the big time or established artists reminding the world of their continued talent. Simply put, it’s just the best in music that we think you should hear.

Ross From Friends (aka Felix Clary Weatherall) took the online world by storm in 2015 with his signature sound of lo-fi house following the release of ‘Talk To Me You’ll Understand’, a track with minimal textures that resonate tastefully by playing on the old-school influences that inspired Weatherall growing up, specifically his parents’ love for dance music that involved hosting numerous parties in London and embarking on a European trip together.

With the Family Portrait album opener ‘Happy Birthday Nick’ playing on the listener’s ear by attempting to replicate the feel of a manipulated VHS, which garners organic character in itself that is anything from the norm of modern pop music, you find yourself quickly sent on a rollercoaster of lush flange effects before landing on the more club ready vibes of ‘Thank God I’m A Lizard’. With the new direction of bringing interesting elements of undiscovered sounds to his brand as an artist, Ross From Friends never loses that bit of magic that has always evoked a sense of wonder as he successfully combines real life sounds with various electronic textures such as shimmering, dusky melodies to sonic layers and bigger beats that show overall maturity in Weatherall’s latest productions. Alongside other incredible singles on the album from the likes of ‘Project Cybersyn’, ‘Pale Blue Dot’ and even the title track, we can’t wait to see what the future has in store for this Colchester-born producer.
