With the sweetest of sounds coming from the speakers of the Ticket Arena office it would be mighty selfish of us to keep them to ourselves, so we thought we’d let you in on what our staff use to soundtrack a hard day’s work. Now a weekly feature with the intent of bringing your attention to wonderful new sounds every Monday, our Album Of The Week looks at releases from the best in the game, whether fresh new acts about to hit the big time or established artists reminding the world of their continued talent. Simply put, it’s just the best in music that we think you should hear.
Unless you’ve been sleeping under a rock during the surge of grime acts topping the charts in recent years, you’ll be familiar with the work of Skepta. Three years since the release of his Mercury Music Prize winning breakthrough record Konnichiwa and leading tracks ‘Shutdown’ and ‘That’s Not Me’ are still rousing the same reactions they did in 2016. So the bar is set high for any follow up, and luckily his most recent release Ignorance Is Bliss exceeds all expectations as not only has his sound matured, but so had the running themes of this record. Delving into his new found fatherhood as well as racism in police brutality in album opener ‘Bullet From A Gun’. Yet, it’s the collaboration track with J Hus that really stands out, as Hus’ catchy hook of witty lyrics are met with Sketpa’s stand out rhythms. Other collabs come from brother JME as well as BBK, WizKid, Nafe Smallz and more.
Skepta heads to EXIT Festival this year, headlining the brand new stage dedicated to hip hop stage EXIT Gang also featuring the likes of Desiigner, IAMDDB, Bad Copy and more. EXIT Festival takes over Novi Sad in Serbia between Thursday 2nd and Sunday 7th July.
