With the sweetest of sounds coming from the speakers of the Ticket Arena office it would be mighty selfish of us to keep them to ourselves, so we thought we’d let you in on what our staff use to soundtrack a hard day’s work. Now a weekly feature with the intent of bringing your attention to wonderful new sounds every Tuesday, our Album Of The Week looks at releases from the best in the game, whether fresh new acts about to hit the big time or established artists reminding the world of their continued talent. Simply put, it’s just the best in music that we think you should hear.
Three years post her seminal album, A Seat At The Table, Solange surprised everyone with the unexpected release of her fourth album, When I Get Home. Keeping it short and sweet, the new record only totals at 39 minutes, but within its nineteen tracks, there’s a deep exploration of not only some new genres and territories for the artist, but some deeper meanings and themes, making this transient journey completely worthwhile. With collaborations from the likes of Pharrell Williams, Sampha, Panda Dear, Gucci Mane, Tyler, The Creator and more, as well as a surreal supporting film to go alongside the tracks, there’s no doubt that this art piece touches on the eclectic, with elements of jazz and her sultry, soulful vocals interwoven with hip hop beats, electronic pulses, narrative excerpts and more. Solange has done more than release an album, she’s created a celebration of what it means to be a black woman and it’s definitely worth your time and attention.
Solange will be performing at this year’s Parklife Festival, which heads to Manchester’s Heaton Park on Saturday 8th and sunday 9th June. In July, Solange will headline Lovebox Festival at London’s Gunnersbury Park, which will take place on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th.
