Album Of The Week: Special Request

Album Of The Week: Special Request

Mollie Denton | Features & Interviews

With the sweetest of sounds coming from the speakers of the Ticket Arena office it would be mighty selfish of us to keep them to ourselves, so we thought we’d let you in on what our staff use to soundtrack a hard day’s work. Now a weekly feature with the intent of bringing your attention to wonderful new sounds every Monday, our Album Of The Week looks at releases from the best in the game, whether fresh new acts about to hit the big time or established artists reminding the world of their continued talent. Simply put, it’s just the best in music that we think you should hear.

Paul Woolford’s alias, Special Request, a project that was built on his teenage love for jungle and rave, releases his second album of the year via Houndstooth. Bedroom Tapes has been described as “wide-eyed and naive”music from a younger Paul Woolford. The album is made up of previous material discovered in a box of cassettes previously thought to be lost, that appeared whilst moving house. His first Special Request album release of the year Vortex certainly did not disappoint expectations, featuring a playful mix of rave, jungle, techno and gabber, thrilling listeners and making them eager to hear the next release.

This time round, Bedroom Tapes Woolford takes us to a different level of his creative techniques, as well as taking us back to his youth. Recorded during the 90s, the eight tracks featuring on the album were originally what lead Woolford to being signed to the UK techno label Blue Basique. The most exciting thing about Woolford’s second release is that he has shared with us the sounds he created earlier on during his music career. Key tracks such as ‘Thermatropic’ and ‘Double Rainbow’ allow long-term fans to rejoice the infamous Special Request style, as well as ‘Entropy’ and ‘Phosphorescence’ featuring bouncy basslines created for the dancefloor. Woolford has mentioned that his intended focus at the moment is getting the “emotional content” into his tracks - this is certainly discovered within the tracks on the album, that were seemingly lost before but are now forever grateful to have been found.

Special Request takes on a huge amount of sets during this year's incredible festival season, you catch him at the following:
