Leeds’ Dirty Disco has been responsible for more than its fair share of dancefloor chaos over the years, and as a resident DJ, Matt Cooper has seen it all. Ducking and diving through everything from disco to techno and back again, Cooper and co have soundtracked some of the best parties Yorkshire has seen, also bringing in some of the biggest stars of underground dance music from around the world. Ahead of another huge affair with Derrick Carter on Saturday 10th February, we asked Matt Cooper to pick out the Dirty Disco essentials, past and present.
Extrawelt – Soopertrack
Used to play this a lot towards the end of my sets…strong emotive record that epitomized the heady times.
Stephan Bodzin vs. Marc Romboy – The Alchemist
There was always a Bodzin record dropped by somebody at one point or another in the night. I remember when we booked him to play and he turned up full of flu…still obliterated the place with his infectious passion.
Alter Ego – Gate 23
Their bigger hit ‘Rocker’ was making waves around the same time, but this was the one for me.
Misc. – Vakuum Audio
It was actually Richy Ahmed who put me on to this German duo back then, totally opened my mind up to a whole new sound and vibe.
Sasse – Soul Sounds (Dirt Crew Solid Diamond Remix)
This one will never leave my side…drop it at the right time and stand back to admire the carnage. Still an absolute weapon.
Italojohnson – 07A1 (Floorplan Remix)
Released on Spencer Parker’s mighty Work Them Recordings, Robert Hood flips this classic Italojohnson track under his Floorplan guise. Hands up!
Ekman – GMMDI (Breaker 1 2 Remix)
The mysterious Breaker 1 2 putting a riff in your head that’ll be with you for days.
Yaleesa Hall x Malin – Cahen
Heads down, dance-yourself-into-the-ground goodness from the Hypercolour camp. Love dropping this and watching people lose themselves on the dancefloor.
Blawan – 993
Not for the faint-hearted…
Denis Sulta – It’s Only Real
The Glaswegian’s debut on Jackmaster’s Numbers imprint put him on the trajectory he is riding now and it’s easy to see why. Beauty.
Disco gets dirty again on Saturday 10th February at MiNT Warehouse, where Derrick Carter, Jasper James, Dan Shake, Lone and more will be throwing down belters.
