Kerri Chandler, hailing from New York, is synonymous with the words house music. For many, myself included, he has acted as an introduction to a genre now held dearly. Owner of the Madhouse Records and Kaoz Theory imprints, Chandler is a true master of the genre. He often plays live keyboard during his DJ sets and his back catalogue is seriously bewildering; five tracks are almost inadequate to give a fair reflection of his talent. I would heavily recommend investigating and watching his Red Bull Music Academy interview in order to gain an insight into his glittering career.
Kerri Chandler – Rain
This track is quintessential house. Softly articulated chords, overlaid with a soothing Chandler vocal, a classic in every sense of the word. A staple in collections around the world, a record not to be overlooked.
Kerri Chandler – Mommy What’s A Record
Kerri’s use of vocals in his tunes is genius for me, and here it is no different. A recent addition to my own collection following a repress, the floaty arpeggiations and stabbing chords are almost soothing. Yet another is his long list of classics, this one won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
Kerri Chandler – Return 2 Acid
Chandler has produced the odd acid track here and there and this one is a real treat for the ears. The enduring acid synth line drives the tune forwards throughout and the gritty, sleazy vocal adds an air of mystery. Listening to the lyrics demonstrates Chandler’s love for acid and he has paid homage beautifully here.
The System – You’re In My System (Kerri Chandler Remix)
The first time I heard this, I lost it! Regularly heard in sets by Jeremy Underground and Motor City Drum Ensemble, the vocal is so catchy it’ll stick in your head for days. Unfortunately, the record will set you back a good few pounds, but those dreamy chords are well worth it. A tune guaranteed to get any dancefloor grooving, what Chandler is best at.
Kerri ‘Kaoz’ Chandler presents Arnold Jarvis – Inspiration
The common thread throughout these records is the keys so characteristic of a Chandler production. It’s the punchy bassline here that I think really shines through and makes it so incredible. A typical house vocal sitting on top makes for another real treat from an artist who has had so much to offer dance music over the years.
Kerri Chandler plays at Croatia’s Hideout Festival on Zrce Beach in June, and also appears at Lovebox in a back to back set with Jeremy Underground at Gunnersbury Park on Friday 13th July.
