Festival Picks: August 2018

The UK hasn’t seen a summer like this for quite some time. With the sun still shining and the joys of a half decent world cup campaign living on, what better way to continue this fantastic British summer than with another of our favorite national pass times, festivals!

From Bestival to South West Four, there’s a whole host of great events on throughout the country and abroad to keep you entertained in the coming months. Here’s our rundown of the best to come in August.

Thursday 2nd – Monday 6th August
Lulworth Castle, East Lulworth

Bestival kicks things off this August with the second installment after moving to their new home in Dorset. Expect big performances from headliners London Grammar, M.I.A and Chaka Khan along with plenty of top notch DJ sets and live performances from the likes of Bicep, Honey Dijon and Denis Sulta. A staple of the UK festival circuit since 2004, Bestival really is one of the best.

Wilderness Festival
Thursday 2nd – Sunday 5th August
Cornbury Park, Charlbury

Set in the beautiful Cornbury Park, Wilderness has been providing a magical experience for all since 2011. Expect an eclectic mix of music, theatre and food. Music across the weekend will be supplied by the likes of Chic & Nile Rodgers, Bastille, Justice, Jon Hopkins and Kamasi Washington.

Gorilla Beach Festival
Friday 3rd August
Majuba Beach, Redcar

Tom Zanetti, Danny T, Charlie Hepworth and Mistajam all bring the beats to the beach for this one-day festival near Middlesbrough.

Social Series X Deadmau5 & Nic Fanciulli
Sunday 5th August
4-6 Rose yard, Maidstone

The team behind The Social bring two heavy weights of dance music to the south for the opening event of their new series. Curated by Nic Fanciulli, the opening party will feature himself playing alongside long-time friend and international dance music star Deadmau5. The venue is yet to be released but it's set to be an intimate setting with tickets sure to sell out.

Artwork Presents Art’s House: A Lovely London Festival
Saturday 11th August
3 Mill Lane, Stratford, London

Art’s House has grown over the last couple of years into one of dance music’s most fun filled and exciting events. After residencies at XOYO and the legendary Pikes in Ibiza, Artwork brings the beats home for the first time this summer.

Alongside one UK legend is another as the mighty DJ Harvey is set to soundtrack the day alongside the former magnetic man. With a wonderful East London setting and the usual blissful blend of house and disco to match, this one’s sure to be one of the highlights of the summer.

Anjunadeep Open Air: London
Sunday 12th August
3 Mill Lane, Stratford, London

Anjunadeep’s first ever festival comes to London this summer. Originally an offshoot of the iconic trance trio Above & Beyond’s Anjunabeats, the former has grown since 2005 into one of the UK’s most influential deep house labels. With performances from head honcho James Grant (b2b Jody Wisternoff) alongside label stalwarts Yotto, Moonboots, 16 bit lolitas and Luttrell, you can expect to see some of the finest DJs the deeper, more progressive side of house music has to offer.

The Great Northern Ska Festival
Saturday 18th August
Bowlers Exhibition Centre, Manchester

Legendary headliners UB40 will be supported by none other than Bad Manners and the Manchester Ska Foundation. Look forward to hearing all the classics in one of Manchester’s biggest and best venues.

Elrow Town London
Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th August
Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, London

Elrow return to the Olympic park across two days after the success of last years’ event. Saturday plays host to the likes of Richy Ahmed, Steve Lawler, wAFF & Andreas Campo, along with the usual fantastic Elrow production. There will be mind blowing stages, theatrical show stopping moments, crazy Elrow town characters and tonnes of colourful confetti throughout the weekend.

Sunday sees Fatboy Slim on headlining duties with Claptone, Idris Elba, Shy FX, Mele and many more completing a stellar line up.

Reading & Leeds Festival
Friday 24th – Sunday 26th August
Richfield Avenue, Reading
Bramham Park, Wetherby

Another pillar of the UK festival scene, Reading & Leeds Festival returns for its 19th year as a split site festival. 2018 features headline performances from the likes of Fallout Boy, Kendrick Lamar, Post Malone, Kings of Leon, Courteeners and Sum 41.

Reading and Leeds has been a favorite amongst UK festival goers for years and previous headliners include, Eminem, Oasis, Metallica and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. As always there will be a big festival atmosphere and more than enough booze for the 80 odd thousand in attendance.

South West Four
Saturday 25th – Sunday 26th August
Clapham Common

One of the biggest festivals in London returns in 2018. South West Four brings dance music’s biggest and best acts to the capital over the August bank holiday weekend. This year you can catch the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Armin Van Buuren, Fedde Le Grand, MK and Benny Benassi on the Saturday with Chase & Status, Craig David, DJ EZ and Roni Size providing the sounds on Sunday. Now in its 14th year, South West Four has been at the forefront of the capital’s festival scene ever since its inception.

YARD: Open Air Club
Saturday 25th August
74 – 78 Avon St, Bristol

Fusing art and music, this collaboration sees some of Bristol’s best dance music institutions coming together for what’s sure to be one of the highlights of the summer in the south west. Returning for the second year, YARD brings the joys of dancing outdoors to the Motion complex in Bristol this August bank holiday. Building on their hugely successful debut last summer Âme, Rødhåd, Avalon Emerson, Antal, Andrew Weatherall and Leon Vynehall will be bringing the tunes all day.

Full Moon Med Fest 2018
Saturday 25th August
Gianpula Village, Malta

Debuting this year in the Mediterranean party hotspot of Malta, Full Moon Med Fest brings the madness of Thailand’s infamous full moon parties all the way over to Europe. You can expect buckets of booze and buckets of fun to boot. Thankfully, it also looks like the usual EDM influenced full moon soundtrack is one thing they’ve left on Koh Phangan. With the ‘baron of techno’ Dave Clarke, Pig & Dan and Dean Demanuele all featured on the line up, this one’s got a solid line up of European techno to keep you dancing all the way through.

Jika Jika! Festival 2018
Saturday 25th – Sunday 26th August
Ebrington St, Derry, Londonderry, Ireland

Jika Jika is brand new to the Irish festival circuit, making its debut this summer. Two days of dancing on the emerald isle with the likes of Dennis Sulta, Green Velvet, Octave One (Live), Patrick Topping and Charlotte de Witte all providing the soundtrack.

Elrow Newcastle – El Bowsque Encantado
Sunday 26th August
Time Square, Newcastle

Elrow returns to the UK for a northern date, taking over Newcastle’s Times Square for their enchanted forest party! The first outdoor event of its kind Elrow have hosted in the north of England, there will be plenty of weird and wonderful goings on to keep revelers on their toes from start to finish. The line up is yet to be announced but expect the usual blend of house and disco sounds to keep those toes tapping.

Reasons Summer Soundclash
Sunday 26th August
Five Mile Road, St. Oean

This bank holiday you can catch one of reggae music’s true icons David Rodigan playing for Reason’s 40th anniversary tour. Alongside the MBE awarded DJ there will be a whole host of DJs and live artists playing including Fabio & Grooverider  (Special Jungle Set), Mungo’s Hi-Fi (Full Sound System), Top Cat & Eva Lazarus (MC & Singer), Skank Atlantic (Classic Reggae/Ska Set) plus a whole host of local artists.

Electric Fields Festival
Friday 31st August – 2nd September
Drumlanrig Castle, Thornhill, Scotland

A vibrant and idyllic festival set in the luscious Scottish countryside, Electric Fields returns for 2018 with another stellar line up. This year sees Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds on headline duties alongside James and Leftfield. Other acts across the weekend include George Ezra, Public Service Broadcasting, Young Fathers and the Coral. The picturesque Drumlanrig Castle provides the perfect setting for this boutique, family friendly festival just an hour north of Glasgow.

Dimensions Festival
Wednesday 29th August – Sunday 2nd September
Fort Punta Christo, Pula, Croatia

The mighty Dimensions returns to the fort this year with Kraftwerk and Moodymann headlining the opening party in the iconic roman amphitheater. The main festival sees a who’s who of electronic music playing including Ben UFO, Bonobo, Helena Hauff, Hunee, Jon Hopkins, Nina Kraviz and Peggy Gou to name but a few.

Dimensions is one of the worlds leading electronic music festivals. It blurs the lines between genres leading to a fully immersive experience for dance music fans and is set in one of the most breath taking and iconic settings of any festival in the world.

Sea Dance Festival
Thursday 30th August – Saturday 1st September
Buljarica, Crna Gora, Budvar, Montenegro

Now in its 5th year, Sea Dance has really made a name for its self for being one of the most exciting medium sized festivals around. Set on the stunning Montenegrin coast, Sea Dance features the likes of Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Paul Kalkbenner, Nina Kraviz and Dax J on a line up filled with diversity and showcases of local talent. Relatively cheap and guaranteed good weather, Sea Dance is a sure bet for a good time.
