We thought we’d shake things up a bit for our latest In Conversation piece, and so when the opportunity arose to speak to Dutch EDM titan Don Diablo we decided to use it as a chance to grill him on the further reaches of his musical repertoire ahead of his upcoming UK tour. Stopping off in Leeds and Bournemouth’s respective O2 Academy venues for two shows with his HEXAGON label in October, he’ll be mixing in all your favourite fizzers and stompers as he cycles through big builds and diving drops with the ease of a DJ sat near the very top of the EDM tree.
Catching up with him before he embarks on the autumn tour, we asked Don Pepijn Schipper to delve deep into his music collection and deliver us a playlist, giving him five prompts to guide the way. Let’s see what he came up with.
The best edit you’ve done for another artist?
I found this track on the internet and signed it immediately. It just needed a few tweaks to make it work a bit better on the floor and not long after this went on to become one of the most successful records on my HEXAGON label. King Arthur has made lots of exciting new music ever since and that's why I am bringing him along with me for this UK tour together with Madison Mars, another rising star on my label.
A track that you could enjoy with your parents and older relatives.
Ryuichi Sakamoto is an absolute inspiration and this song always makes me reflect on life.
A track you love but couldn’t play in a normal set.
Probably one of the best covers of all time. Johnny Cash just took this Nine Inch Nails record to another level.
A track that you will be playing out a lot over the next month.
My new single "Cutting Shapes". This track was originally just meant to be a DJ tool for my own sets, but it started to lead it's own life so I decided to release it officially in the end.
An EDM track that could catch on in underground scenes.
This is one of the more housey releases on my label which has garnered strong support all across the board. It's so catchy, you only have to hear it once and it's stuck in your head for days.
The end of October will see Don Diablo playing O2 Academy in both Leeds and Bournemouth, with performances on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th respectively. Tickets are now onsale.
