There’s always something coming out the speakers in the Ticket Arena office, so we thought we’d share some of the sonic splendours that soundtrack all of our hard work. Now a weekly feature that brings a different artist to the fore each Thursday, the TA Mix Of The Week scours the vaults for some of our favourite sets of old and keeps a beady eye out for the classics of the future, serving up a taste of the artists that make us happy to do what we do.
When you encounter a mix from a selector as elusive as Nicolas Lutz, you have to pay it heed. A master DJ not just in terms of technical ability, but in terms of the way that he collates his music, Nicolas Lutz tends to be the only person in the room to have heard any of his tracks before. Interested almost exclusively in the music that can’t be easily found, the Uruguayan will bemuse and enthrall in equal measure.
A symbol of musical exploration if ever underground music was to present one, few DJs are better placed to provide a Mix Of The Week as mysterious or captivating as this one, offered to Dimensions Festival’s podcast series ahead of his set in Croatia this summer. Easing in with ambient washes and skittering percussion, the gentle pads and understated melodies soon give way to chunky electronics and the kind of weirdo dance that he’s best known for, albeit at much reduced tempos. Coasting through downtempo breakbeat, electro and space-age numbers, this mix is the work of a DJ who, for the moment, cannot be caught.
Nicolas Lutz has four hours to play with when he sets up in the Wire basement on Friday 9th March, joining Butter Side Up for a deep and trippy night in Leeds. Returning to the city in early June, he’ll also appear at the inaugural inner city electronic, before continuing onto Junction 2 at Boston Manor Park and then Pula for Dimensions before the summer is out.
