There’s always something coming out the speakers in the Ticket Arena office, so we thought we’d share some of the sonic splendours that soundtrack all of our hard work. Now a weekly feature that brings a different artist to the fore each Thursday, the TA Mix Of The Week scours the vaults for some of our favourite sets of old and keeps a beady eye out for the classics of the future, serving up a taste of the artists that make us happy to do what we do.
We weren’t sure what to expect when American black metal band Wolves in the Throne Room were given an hour free reign on NTS Radio, but we’re welcoming the oxymoronic outcome of their versatile mix, featuring both the heavier drones of guitar, as well as some somewhat ambient electronica interwoven. A collective well known for their extreme sound of up-tempo, ornate metal riffs drenched in doom effects and mythical elements, it’s no surprise they’ve featured some counterparts of their genre, with heavy breakdowns, screeching vocals and breakbeat drums from the likes of Karp, Weakling, Asunder and more - but what may come as a surprise is Wolves In the Throne Rooms’ inclusion of softer sounding tracks. The likes of Grouper’s sweet, ethereal acoustic track ‘Heavy Water/I’d Rather Be Sleeping’, experimental electronica from Moor Mother, ambient psychedlia from Mount Eerie offer delicate intervals of relief slotted beside steep plunges back into the world of extreme metal.
Wolves In The Throne Room take to Liverpool’s Invisible Wind Factory venue on Wednesday 27th June for a night of tantalising riffs.
