Top Picks: Dimensions Festival 2017

Top Picks: Dimensions Festival 2017

Andrew Kemp | Features & Interviews

Close your eyes and place your finger somewhere along the Dimensions 2017 lineup and you’re going to land on something good, such is the quality of one of Europe’s most impressive dance festivals. Offering plenty of artists that need little introduction as well as a fair few that are just starting on the path to similar acclaim, the festival on the beautiful Adriatic Coast will this year start with a stunning opening concert from Grace Jones, Moderat and more, running from Wednesday 30th August to Sunday 3rd September.

With Theo Parrish, Helena Hauff, Floating Points, Hessle Audio, Marcel Dettmann and Jeff Mills among the acts guaranteed to draw enormous crowds, here’s a rundown of five other artists that you should definitely be squeezing into your busy schedule.

Ata Kak

Ghana’s Yaw Atta-Owusu might never have found fame had it not been for Brian Shimkowitz of Awesome Tapes From Africa uncovering a cassette in the a Cape Coast street market, but there’s no questioning that he was born to perform on very the biggest stages. Blessed with incredible energy and irresistible charisma, his live set takes the popular tracks from his 90s album Obaa Sima and adds plenty of soup, turning them into some of the best festival tunes around. If it’s sunny (and at Dimensions it’s always sunny) then you probably won’t find a better vibe anywhere in Croatia when Ata Kak gets going.

Tama Sumo & Lakuti
Sparks fly when these two Berghain and Panorama Bar mainstays go back to back, so expect to hear the best house music you’ve ever heard if you’re there to witness it. Tama Sumo by herself is one of the best DJs around, dipping into techno, disco and more as and when she sees fit, but with Uzuri Recordings founder Lakuti alongside her you can expect things to go up another notch in Croatia.

Storming electro has rather appropriately stormed its way back into fashion over the last few years, and that’s good news for DynArec fans, who can see him perform a live set off the back of working his way into sets by Helena Hauff among others. Providing furious body-shaking rhythms and synth lines that will melt the brain, DynaRec’s musical offerings will fizz like a ton of caesium dropped in a boating lake.

Sadar Bahar
To be hailed as Chicago’s best digger is kind of a big deal, but Sadar Bahar plays as if he’s never noticed the worship that he receives. Owner of over 14,000 records accumulated over three decades of musical devotion, he’s the kind of guy that guys like Theo Parrish are in awe of, so you can bet he’ll do it for you too. Crème de la crème, as they say.

Sassy J
Swiss free spirit Sassy J grew up on folk for breakfast, soul for lunch and jazz for dinner, quickly discarding the need for genres altogether as she committed to the search for the best music from all walks of life. Dipping into long-hidden and bizarre pools and bringing eccentric prizes to the surface, Sassy J might just oversee the most intriguing dance at Dimensions.

Dimensions takes place at Fort Punta Christo in Croatia from Thursday 31st August until Sunday 3rd September, with a separate opening concert getting proceedings underway on Wednesday 30th August.
