Top Picks: International Women's Day 2018

Top Picks: International Women's Day 2018

International Women’s Day might only come round one a year, but let’s face it - the girls are rocking it all year long. Here to celebrate five absolutely dynamite musicians at the height of their powers, we picked out the female identifying artists that excite us most as we get ready for the 2018 summer festival season. We want to say that sisters are definitely doing it for themselves, and here are five examples...

This Manchester artist is not only dominating the festival circuit this year, but she’s completely dominating the game as a whole. Combining her smooth vocals with trap-tinted beats and her rhythmic rap style lyrics telling the story of being a 20 something woman, IAMDDB is definitely an act catching live this year, which won’t be a problem as she’ll be offering her sound to a whole lot of stages throughout 2018.

When you’re the daughter of Neneh Cherry expectations can be high, but pop songstress Mabel rose to the challenge and completely smashed it out of the park. Following the release of a very special mixtape, the 22 year old London based musician has gone on to form a girl power-fuelled trio featuring other fierce females Stefflon Don and Raye.

Helena Hauff
Electro has come back into fashion in a big way over the last few years, and Helena Hauff can claim a substantial part of the responsibility for that. Blistering sets combining the genre with techno, EBM and breakbeat have made her one of the most exciting selectors in Europe, and she’s only getting better too; sets in Croatia, London, Edinburgh, Leeds and more will offer proof of that this summer.

Margaret Dygas

Anyone who saw Margaret Dygas play the sunrise set at Houghton’s secret stage last summer will know exactly why the Polish selector makes this list, but if you’re not familiar don’t worry - just get yourself a ticket for Dimensions Festival in Croatia. One of those truly special DJs who can find a place for the weirdest of tunes and make them feel like the only music you could possibly want, Dygas is a minimal genius who makes up the rules as she goes along.

Honey Dijon
Playing house music as it should be, Honey Dijon is a DJ who won’t let anything get in her way, striving to lay down the finest dancefloor fillers whilst showing the world that Chicago still does it best. A champion of trans women and an inspirational character for all, Dijon is an amazing musician, a fashion icon and a social rights advocate all rolled into one, and you can catch her at Parklife and El Dorado Festival this summer.
