Top Picks: In:Motion 2019

Jonathan Coll | Features & Interviews

Motion is something of a Bristol institution. It occupies a similar position on its home city’s musical landscape to Manchester’s Warehouse Project and Liverpool’s Circus. It’s a party that is equally well regarded by those in the know, having been voted Best Large Club in 2018 by DJ Mag. The venues concept is a simple one, being the sort of typically cavernous space that lends itself to large-scale production and programming. But it’s a simple concept done well, and the 2019 edition of parties is one of the most exciting yet.

In:Motion 2019 / He.She.They Halloween with Maya Jane Coles
Sat 26th Oct
Motion, Bristol

As we moved into Autumn the Halloween clubbing program comes into view. Motion presents He She They, curated by Maya Jane Coles. She’ll be joined by Panorama Bar residents Steffi & Virginia, and fast rising producer La Fleur. Local collective Bitch Please will occupy the tunnel, supported by a roster including Zenzero and Blixa. Having recently presented the more ethereal sound of Nocturnal Sunshine, it’s been difficult to know what to expect from Maya Jane Coles’ performances, but her recent releases have always carried her trademark groove.

In:Motion 2019 / Snowbombing Presents Dusky, Artwork, Jasper James & more
Sat 23rd Nov
Motion, Bristol

Away from the label showcases and DJ’s own creations, alpine ski & snowboard festival Snowbombing hosts their annual warm up party on 23rd November. This year they invite Dusky, Artwork and Holly Lester. The former are back on the circuit having taken a short while away. They shot back to prominence this summer with a superb release on Running Back; the sort of record made for big-room revelry. Artwork has become known for anthemic disco anthems but is equally at home playing more muscular sounds.

In:Motion 2019 / Boiler Room Bristol
Fri 13th Dec
Motion, Bristol

Far less is known about Boiler Room’s edition on Friday 13th December. Details of the programming and guests are a closely kept secret, but we can be confident that Boiler Room won’t be dropping their usually high standards. Their approach to dance music has revolutionised the industry, giving a voice and a platform to some of the industry’s brightest young talents, as they navigated their way from warm-up to headliners. Expect new faces alongside some of house & techno’s heavy hitters.

In:Motion 2019 / Perpetual: Âme, Gerd Janson, DJ Tennis & more
Sat 14th Dec
Motion, Bristol

Following the success of Dixon and Maceo Plex’s respective showcases, Ame headlines the forthcoming edition of Perpetual. Kristian Beyer & Frank Wiedemann have dissolved the lines between DJing and live performance. Their DJ sets lean heavily on the Chicago House and Detroit Techno that influenced their formative years, having cultivated a signature sound that has often found its home on Innervisions. They’ll be joined in the main room by DJ Tennis; another who has continued to push musical boundaries through his own imprint Life and Death. The tunnel hosts Gerd Janson, whose typically energetic blend of house and disco will offer an excellent alternative.

In:Motion 2019 / Sven Vath, Ilario Alicante, Dana Ruh
Fri 20th Dec
Motion, Bristol

On 20th December Cocoon boss Sven Vath will deliver a set of typically driving techno set, along with the sort of pomp and ceremony that usually comes with any of the label’s parties. Dana Ruh and Ilario Alicante are regular guests for Cocoon, with the lineup being a strictly family affair. More names are yet to be announced across the venue, but it’s safe to assume it’ll be an exciting mix of old favourites and emerging artists.

It’s a stacked program from front to back, with sounds from across the dance music spectrum being represented by the west country’s biggest and best party.
