After an unforgettable debut last year, Nova Batida return this September to the stunning joint venues of LX Factory and Village Underground in Lisbon, Portugal. As Europe’s newest music, arts and culture festival, the creators behind Nova Batida aim to explore and celebrate all diverse sounds found within the broad spectrum of electronic music. Alongside their incredible programme of music, the festival aims to give attendees a unique experience of arts, culture and the beautiful city of Lisbon. Alternative experiences are also at hand at Nova Batida, which focus on fitness and wellbeing of attendees, such as surf lessons, rooftop yoga, talks, museum tours, workshops, as well as local street food and drinks.

This years lineup features some huge names, including the likes of Four Tet, Ben UFO, Hunee, Midland and more. Alongside the globally renowned, there are some rising stars and brand new talent that make this festival a must attend event. We have picked out some of the old and legendary, as well as the new, upcoming artists that you simply cannot miss.

Four Tet

Regarded as perhaps the most definitive electronic artist of recent years, DJ and producer Four Tet, or known as Kieran Hebden, whose experimental recordings that blend both original and electronic sounds have gained widespread praise from across the board of electronic music as well as indie rock fans. With the unforgettable and outstanding shows that occured at Alexander Palace in London earlier this year, featuring an impressive, magical light show paired with his dreamy ambient sounds, went down in history, receiving serious praise from critics and regarded as a specific high point within his career. HAAi

From psychedelic rock band member to a DJ securing a residency at Phonox London back in 2016, HAAi rose swiftly through the ranks of electronic music bringing her adventurous track selections to dancefloors all over the world. Having gained Essential Mix of the Year on BBC Radio 1 last year, and continuously featuring on B2B sets with the likes of Denis Sulta, Mall Grab and Midland, HAAi is certainly not somebody to miss this year at Nova Batida. Playing six hour sets every week has allowed her to expand her record selection and experiment with different genres, equaling into dazzling sets leaving club goers’ minds ingrained with the name HAAi.

Talib Kweli

Previously a half of the iconic rap duo Black Star, the other half being Mos Def, Talib Kweli is regarded as one of the most influential artists within hip hop. It is an absolute honour for Nova Batida to host a legendary rap figure, who has never stopped pushing the boundaries of the art and power of language. In recent years, Talib Kweli has collaborated with other huge names including Kanye West and Anderson Paak. Lyrically gifted, aware, and insightful on social and political aspects, Talib Kweli is a highly regarded rapper and brings his classic jams and hits to Nova Batida.

Violet

One of Lisbon’s very own, DJ, producer and owner of Naive records Violet has been shaking up the cities nightlife for a short while and it’s her time to shine at Nova Batida this year. Violet is recognised for delicately blending techno with breakbeats and acid basslines that has contributed to her increasingly becoming more recognisable. Attracting the LGBTQ community through her positive energy and openness, Violet began working with a collective named Mina, that aims to dancers and music artists together with sexual and gender liberation causes. Receiving praise from the likes of Octa Octa and Eris Drew, Violet is a definite upcomer that you won’t regret seeing.

Jon Hopkins

Jon Hopkins is a trained pianist and composer, and is the creator of beautiful, electronic albums that have been released in recent years. Combining the ancient and modern classical, with downtempo and electronic influences, Hopkins is also a renowned collaborator, who has worked with the likes of Coldplay in the past. His live sets have been described as gripping and heavy, although this time round he plays a DJ set at Nova Batida, so who knows what could be in store.
