XOYO’s spring/summer season is looking particularly exciting this year, with plenty of intriguing events lined up for May and June. Here are our five picks for the months ahead at one of London’s finest music venues.
Thursday 4th May
Notorious B.I.G - An Orchestral Rendition of Ready To Die
The seventh in a run of shows that are selling out in with dizzying speed, the Thursday 4th May event may be the last chance saloon for anyone wanting to see hip-hop legend Notorious B.I.G brought back to life by a full orchestra setup. Performing his seminal album Ready To Die in its entirety, the 16 piece ensemble will pay tribute to Biggie and an album that is considered one of the greatest ever made.
Saturday 20th May
A loved voice as synonymous with soul as any you’ll find, Jocelyn Brown is described by many as one of the greatest vocalists that RnB, disco and funk have ever seen, having leant her talents to projects across multiple genres and to a plentitude of artists during her now four decades long career. A regular accompaniment to tracks by studio bands like Musique, Inner Life, Cerrone, Chic and Change, Brown has become one of the most sampled people in dance music, her gospel-trained melodies packing real weight and power. Looking ahead to a headline set at XOYO, she’ll look forward to having the London audience hanging off her every syllable.
Tuesday 6th June
Legends from the golden age of disco, Heatwave served up some of the first tracks to come to mind when the word ‘disco’ is uttered, and so they’ll be taking to stage as pioneers, teachers and entertainers all at once when they drop into XOYO.
Thursday 15th June
DJ Yoda presents: The Stranger Things Mixtape Live
Definitely one of the more unusual musical escapades that XOYO will have witnessed, hip-hop cut and paster DJ Yoda will be scratching his way through Netflix favourite Stranger Things with his latest trip to the bizarre. One for the sci-fi fans.
Thursday 29th June
The Greatest Hits of Paul Simon performed by The Transatlantic Ensemble
The Transatlantic Ensemble have been selling out on the regular, with a recent performance of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours showing that there are few better cover bands. Applying an exciting new interpretation of Paul Simon’s classics, they’ll be offering an ode to an icon whose work with Art Garfunkel and 12 Grammy Awards make him one of the world’s greatest ever singer-songwriters.
